Secondhand & Sustainable September at The Frome Independent

Frome Independent 2022Come along to The Frome Independent from 10am until 3pm, on Sunday 4th September in Frome.

It’s been a whole year since The Frome Independent returned to the streets after its 18 month pandemic-induced break. To celebrate, they are shining a light on one of the organisation’s core values: embracing all things secondhand and sustainable.

‘Clothing production is the third biggest manufacturing industry after the automotive and technology industries. Textile production contributes more to climate change than international aviation and shipping combined’ (House of Common Environmental Audit Committee, 2019)

The Frome Independent have invited local groups the ‘Everyone Needs Pockets Network’ and ‘Indigo Frome Denim Repair’ to come along to The Village Green outside Frome library, to show visitors how to extend the life of clothes, combat fast fashion and look at how we can collectively change things in Frome for the future through reuse and repair.

There will be displays of revamped clothing, visible repairing plus a fabulous dress made entirely from plastic milk bottles! Indigo Frome Denim Repair will be demonstrating all the ways your jeans can be restored including beautiful embroidered darning. And there’s a live weaving / spinning demonstration with sustainable materials.

Find out about the impact fast fashion and our clothing choices have on our planet and how you can help make a difference. The Everyone Needs Pockets Network was formed through gatherings at Future Shed, part of Green & Healthy Future for Frome.

We have enough clothes in the world right now to dress people for the next 8 generations.

Most of us only wear one third or less of what’s in our wardrobe!’

Frome-based designer Evie Daines of Daines Atelier is passionate about reusing vintage textiles to create unique, handmade clothing. Evie is taking over The Frome Independent’s Instagram account to chat with some of the market’s traders about how they incorporate sustainability and recycling into their innovative designs – head over to The Frome Independent on Instagram to find out more!

As always, there will be a whole host of brilliant makers, food producers, craftspeople and vintage experts on hand. Mouth-watering street food, Donna Somerset DJs playing their exclusive 7inch vinyl along with local live music on the Market Place Stage will ensure all your senses are happy throughout the day!
