The Cheese and Grain, rooted in the centre of Frome is one of Somerset’s key music venues and has played host to some of the finest acts in the world, while the Merlin and Memorial theatres welcome touring shows, live comedy and local productions. Community and outdoor spaces also host a wide variety of events throughout the year.
Time your visit right and you can also enjoy annual events such as the Frome Festival, Carnival or the Agricultural & Cheese Show which showcase local performers, arts and crafts, food and drink and everything in between.
History & Heritage
Frome may be known as a modern, fashionable town, but it’s also steeped in history, dating back to around the 7th century. Once one of the largest towns in Somerset, Frome boasts a rich industrial heritage founded in the wool and cloth industry and later metal-working and printing. Although these industries have since declined, their legacy lives on with Frome laying claim to over 350 listed buildings – more than any other town in Somerset.
The Frome Museum is a hive of information and Frome’s popular guided walks offer a unique insight into the town’s colourful past. Once you’ve exhausted all that Frome has to offer, Frome is perfectly placed to explore other historic towns and sites including Bath, Wells, Lacock, nearby castles and even Stonehenge.
If retail therapy is more your thing, then look no further than Frome’s independent shopping scene. Local retailers have reclaimed the streets of Frome providing a unique shopping experience. You’ll find everything from gifts and vintage clothing to bespoke jewellery, modern arts and crafts studios, local produce and more.
Still hungry for more? Then check out Frome’s thriving markets. Weekly markets take place on Wednesday and Saturday, on the first weekend of each month the town hosts Frome Vegan Market, followed by the award-winning Frome Farmer’s Market on each second Saturday. On the first Sunday of the month you’ll find the award-winning Frome Independent – fast becoming one of the UK’s most popular destination markets. When you’re ready to put your feet up, treat yourself to a meal at one of our many eateries.
The Great Outdoors
If you just need to get away from it all and breath in some fresh air, Frome has a wonderful selection of parks and green spaces and is the perfect base to explore the rolling Somerset and Wiltshire countryside on foot or by bike.
