Join in with a history sound walk around Frome

Listen summer of soundDiscover a piece of Frome’s history with a fascinating walk following in the footsteps of Emma Sheppard. Poetry in motion will be leading the easy-paced 3-mile walk which will give an insight into the workhouse reformer and author of Sunshine in the Workhouse.

The walk will start from the Sheppard family home at Fromefield and then move to the old Workhouse now beautifully restored as Ecos Court housing. Walkers will then stop for refreshments at Frome Town Hall which was once the headquarters of the Poor Law Guardians, and finally head to Trinity Churchyard to see the newly restored grave of Emma Sheppard.

Along the way their will be talks and readings to include a brief history on the pre-1834 Poor Law Reform Act workhouses, a history of some of the buildings as well as a feast of stories, and extracts from Emma’s Victorian best-selling book based on her experiences as a Workhouse Visitor here in Frome.

Children are welcome, as are dogs on leads. Walkers will meet at Fromefield House on 31 August at 10am. It’s a free event but spaces are limited to 25 people so it must be booked in advanced here.

The walk is part of the LISTEN Summer of sound arts project supported by Frome Town Council with a community grant of £820 earlier this year. The grant scheme is open until 23 September for applications of £300 – £2k from groups and organisations with a positive impact for Frome residents. Find out more here.

LISTEN is an immersive and interactive arts project inspired by and made of sound which runs until 1 September 2019. It includes exhibitions, sound installations, music concerts, walks, talks and workshops at Black Swan Arts and around Frome.
