What’s The Story? Narrative in Poetry and Prose: Similarities and Differences

Come join us at The Write Place, Black Swan Arts, Bridge Street, Frome, UK for a workshop exploring the theme of narrative through a variety of readings, discussion points and practical exercises. We’ll interpret the term ‘narrative’ in broad terms, and look at questions such as: What propels a narrative? How can it be condensed and extended, in both poetry and prose?

What is poetic prose? Can we define a prose poem?

Throughout the workshop, we’ll seek to understand what poetry and prose can learn from each other when they use narrative.

For any writers of poetry or prose – or both – and anyone who is interested in the uses of narrative.

This workshop is run by Gillian Barker, a writer and researcher. She studied English, worked in education and also as a literary manager in theatre. She did post-graduate research in garden and landscape history and taught as an associate lecturer at Bristol University and for the Open University. Her poetry has been placed in competitions (for example Café Writers and the Gingko Prize) and included in anthologies. She’s a member of a Poetry School seminar group and is working on two collections of poetry. She’s especially interested in how narrative can be influenced by myth, traditional stories and speculative fiction.
