The Old Oak – screening and discussion with director Ken Loach

March 18 @ 19:00 - 21:30

Free

A landlord of a failing pub in a northern post-mining town befriends a Syrian refugee and together they try to quell tensions between their two communities. In the face of local hostility towards the refugees, the film shows how acts of kindness can build solidarity between different groups deserted by society. “Film-making driven by anger, empathy and unquenched idealism” – Wendy Ide, Observer.

Ken Loach is a legend of British cinema with more than 60 films to his credit. He has been a pioneer of social realism and a constant thorn in the side of the British establishment. He is widely admired in Europe where he is one of the few directors to have twice won the Palme D’Or at Cannes (including for The Old Oak.)
