By 1825, nearing the end of his life, Beethoven had suffered years of painful ill health, emotionally draining family troubles and a profound deafness. However, in this astonishing and beautiful string quartet, the heart of the work is titled ‘Song of Thanksgiving to the Deity from a convalescent’. Despite contemplating his own mortality, Beethoven gives thanks for healing, hope, joy and the beauty of life. The Julian String Quartet: Jean Paterson (violin), Lucy Hewson (violin), Nichola Blakey (viola) and Cressida Nash (cello) share a love of chamber music and especially the works of Beethoven.
