Heal Somerset is the foundation site of nature charity Heal Rewilding. It spans 460 acres of beautiful, undulating countryside and is a haven for wildlife – from beavers to birds, dragonflies to harvest mice. The site began its recovery from its ecologically depleted state at the beginning of 2023 and nature here is bouncing back.

What can you do?

  • There are five miles (eight km) of mown paths criss-crossing the site, allowing you to explore and immerse yourself fully in nature
  • We offer a range of tours and events, from wildlife walks and site tours to hands-on workshops. There are even online webinars for those who can’t make it in person
  • Our annual rewilding gathering Into The Light is held over two days in early summer – come along and learn more about nature recovery in an inclusive, creative and fun environment
  • Want to volunteer? Visit our website to learn more about our different volunteering options, including practical land tasks, helping out at events, wildlife monitoring and more
  • We welcome educational, special interest and community groups to Heal Somerset and can provide a range of activities for you to enjoy during your visit. These range from natural arts and crafts or simply connecting mindfully with nature, to species surveys and willow planting
  • When you arrive at Heal Somerset look out for our Information Station. Here you’ll find maps showing our trails, notes on wildlife sightings from the past few months, and more information about what you’re likely to see here
  • Our two Tamworth pigs will be ready to greet you! They are our resident ‘ecosystem engineers’ who were released to roam freely (within a perimeter fence) in autumn 2025. Their rootling is creating lots of exciting new habitats

Our goal is to restore fully functioning ecosystems by giving nature space to restore itself – space where trees, plants and wildflowers can regenerate, where animals can live freely and vulnerable species can recover. We are capturing specific, meaningful habitat and species data, so that we can provide scientific evidence that our efforts are making a difference.

We are taking direct action to tackle the climate and ecological crises and reconnect people with nature, which we’ll achieve through the rebuilding of wildlife populations, community involvement and storytelling.

When visiting, you’ll hopefully experience some of the varied wildlife we have on site, but even if the creatures are elusive on the day you come, we know you will still find the site a beautiful, peaceful and restorative place to be.
