In this talk\, Professor Marisa Linton uncovers the strange and compelling history of folk horror in the British Isles – from eerie legends rooted in pagan belief to tales shaped by the land itself\, its forgotten rituals\, sacred sites and unsettling past. \nTracing a line from whispered folklore through the chilling ghost stories of M. R. James and Arthur Conan Doyle\, and on to Gothic classics such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula\, we will explore how folk horror has continually reinvented fear for new generations. From The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General\, to modern stories of outsiders stumbling upon remote communities still ruled by “old ways\,” the genre has never stopped evolving. SUMMARY:Frome Voices Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:Frome Voices\, Frome’s largest community choir is delighted to return to the Cheese and Grain on Sunday 22nd March 2026 with a full evening of enticing choral and orchestral music\, enhanced by professional soloists. This year’s performance will include Carl Orff’s popular choral work\, Carmina Burana\, based on a collection of 13th century songs and poems. In addition\, Musical Director Alan Burgess will lead the choir through Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music\, written in1938 to celebrate Sir Henry Wood’s 50 years as a conductor. The concert will also include a performance of 20th century English composer Gerald Finzi’s clarinet concerto\, with orchestral accompaniment. It is reckoned to be one of the finest pieces written for the clarinet. The performance begins at 7.00pm.
