SUMMARY:Wild Guardians at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:A relaxed\, monthly volunteer gathering to support nature restoration. Rooted in a spirit of community and curiosity. Join us to learn new skills\, spend time in nature\, and connect with like-minded folk. \nCome and spend a few hours in nature doing something that matters. No experience is necessary\, just a willingness to get stuck in and try something new. \n42 Acres has been a rewilding nature reserve for over a decade and is species-rich. Join us to connect with the natural world through hands-on activities from wildlife surveying\, to tending habitats\, and slowing down with nature photography. \nSessions run on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm (except in May when we are meeting at 8pm for bats and beavers!). There will be time to connect\, wander\, and simply be outside. If you’re up for it\, you’re welcome to join in for a wild swim too. At 1pm we’ll stop and share a simple lunch together\, provided by 42 Acres. \n____ \nSun 31 May: Bats and Beavers: \nPart of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count\, with guest expert Keith Ball (Somerset Bat Group). Please note: this is an evening session\, running 8–10pm\, as we head out for some gentle nocturnal exploration. \nSun 28 June: Hazel Dormice & Reading Nature: \nJoin us to create footprint tunnels for hazel dormice to discover whether this protected species (that have been spotted on neighbouring land!) exist at 42. We’ll also take a relaxed walk around the 11-acre lake\, recording observations and contributing to global biodiversity databases. We’ll look for signs of beaver activity\, tracks\, and birdlife\, and finish at the white stork enclosure\, part of our species reintroduction work. Guided by Lynne Sewell (Sustainable Witham)\, Robyn Caple (@nestandnettleecology)\, and Lisa Hawes (42 Acres). \nSun 26 July: Butterflies\, Dragonflies + Pond Dipping: \nPart of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme\, one of the longest-running insect surveys in the world. With guest expert Fred Giles\, we’ll explore the world of butterflies\, dragonflies\, and other insects\, with a chance to get closer through pond dipping and observation. \nSun 30 Aug: Reptiles and Botanics: \nJoin us to check reptile refuges across the site\, helping us understand which species are present (and which are likely absent). Or take a creative route\, help us start making a handmade herbarium for the site while learning how to “key out”\, a step by step process used to identify unknown plant species. \nSun 27 Sep: Trees\nDiscover the stories of Britain’s ancient and veteran trees\, and learn how to identify and photograph them in their late-summer form. \nSun 25 Oct: Harvest Mice and Native Fungi:\nHelp us ascertain whether harvest mice are present on the land at 42\, we’ll search together for their tiny nests. We’ll also explore the world of fungi\, discovering what’s emerging across the site at this time of year. \nPlease Note: \n– Gloves and wellies/boots are necessary.\n– If you have issues with mobility please let us know before signing up\, we will do our best to accommodate.\n– Please book only if you’re committed to attending and staying for the entire session.\n– If you become unable to attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else.\n– If rain stops play\, we have a Plan B and will aim to move inside to create bee bricks and/or a herbarium together.\n– Please speak with your licensed medical health professional if you have any health conditions or are pregnant.\n– As much as we love our four-legged friends\, we can not allow dogs on this experience. \nLocation & Arrival: \nPlease arrive 10 minutes before we begin. (Please note these activities are at your own risk – there is no lifeguard).\n– Look out for beaver\, otter\, wild boar\, hare\, deer and a multitude of birds.\n– Explore our rewilded spaces; woodland mushroom farm; permaculture garden; edible ornamental walled garden; species re-introduction projects; and secret treehouse. It’s a really well-thought-out setup. Simple\, but intentional. The team were welcoming\, knowledgeable (beavers\, storks\, permaculture\, mushroom farms\, soil-to-gut) and clearly passionate about what they’re building. This was their first Slow Sunday- here’s to many more!’\nLynda\, Slow Sunday Guest\, June 2025. \n‘A group of 6 of us attended 42Acres Slow Sunday and we all throughly enjoyed ourselves. The land is beautiful\, with lots of lovely quiet trails to walk and soak it all up. We even spotted storks\, buzzards and believe we may have accidentally bumped into a wild boar too. The setting for lunch is fabulous. Really cosy atmosphere and delicious food. Some of us even jumped in the lake for a quick swim which was really refreshing.’\nLucy\, Slow Sunday Guest\, August 2025 \n‘Beautiful experience of reconnection to people\, place and soul.’\nSara\, Slow Sunday Guest\, August 2025. \nPlease Note:\n– Must be booked in advance. SUMMARY:Slow Sunday at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:Spend a slow Sunday afternoon at 42 Acres and reconnect with nature\, with each other\, and with the elements.\nCome as you are and spend a relaxed Sunday of outdoor vibes. Gather in our forest glade for our signature vegetarian wild dining experience. Your meal will be cooked over an open fire with nourishing ingredients organically-grown and wild-foraged on this land.\nGo for a wild swim in the beaver-filled lake\, and relax in the wood-fired sauna. Or simply take time and space to rest and restore on land that has been allowed to do the same. \nYou’re welcome to do as much or as little as you like:\n– Roam the 173 acres of our land – home to millions of lives.\n– Wild swim in our 7-acre lake or take out our rowboat\, SUP board\, or canoe. Or just chill and chat.\n– Add on a holistic treatment (advance bookings only) \nSlow Sundays run from 11am-4pm on the following dates:\n– Sun 5 Apr 2026 (Easter Sunday)\n– Sun 3 May\n– Sun 28 Jun\n– Sun 19 Jul\n– Sun 30 Aug (Bank holiday weekend)\n– Sun 20 Sep \nFeedback from Past Slow Sundays:\n‘I took some proper time out today. Slow Sundays at 42 Acres Retreat are all about connection – with yourself\, with others\, and with nature.\nWild swimming\, a wood-fired sauna\, woodland walks\, and incredible food grown on the land itself – all shared around a long table in the woods\, with birdsong overhead and an eclectic mix of people from all walks of life. Please do not come without a ticket because we will not be able to accommodate you.\n– Adults only.\n– Alcohol-free.\n– Please bring swimwear and towels to go in the lake and/or sauna.\n– Please dress for the weather. This experience will go ahead in most weather conditions. SUMMARY:Autumn Equinox Gathering with Amanda Randell Cox
DESCRIPTION:The Autumn Equinox is that beautiful moment when day and night are held in perfect balance before the landscape begins its gentle transition into winter. Rather than celebrating abundance\, it celebrates noticing\, seed heads instead of flowers\, texture instead of colour\, habitats instead of displays. \nTo celebrate this Autumn Equinox we invite you to join Amanda Randell Cox\, a local artist specialising in landscape-led botanical design\, at Heal Somerset for a morning of exploration\, creation and delicious food. We will start the day with tea\, coffee\, fruit and pastries followed by a guided walk around our beautiful rewilding site. We will then return to the community nature cabin for a creative botanical session inspired by everything we’ve just seen together during the morning walk. \nWorking together in small groups\, guests will create a relaxed autumn table meadow using seasonal grasses and seed heads gathered in advance\, before making their own delicate wire insect to take home. \nFinally\, we will enjoy a seasonal vegetarian brunch surrounded by the botanical table meadows created together\, with time to reflect on the changing season and everything discovered during the morning. \nTimings \n7.30am Meet at the Community Nature Cabin for tea\, coffee\, fruit and pastries \n7.45am Welcome and introduction to the Autumn Equinox\, followed by a guided walk through Heal’s beautiful rewilding landscape \n9.00am Return to the Community Nature Cabin for a creative botanical session \n10.15am Seasonal vegetarian brunch \n11.00am Event ends \nAbout your guide\, Amanda Randell Cox \nAmanda Randell Cox is a botanical artist\, creative project manager and RHS Chelsea Gold medallist whose work explores the relationship between people\, plants and place. \nAfter more than twenty years creating floral installations\, teaching professional floristry and working closely with historic gardens and landscapes\, her practice has evolved towards landscape-led botanical design\, inspired by the textures\, seed heads and quiet beauty of rewilding landscapes as the seasons change. \nAmanda’s work is rooted in the belief that creativity begins with noticing\, slowing down to observe the rhythms of the landscape\, understanding how habitats support wildlife\, and discovering beauty in the often-overlooked details of nature. \nShe is delighted to be sharing this special Autumn Equinox Gathering at Heal Somerset\, inviting guests to slow down\, observe and create together in celebration of the changing season\, and an invitation to keep noticing long after the morning ends.

SUMMARY:Herbalism and Medicine Making Day with Elena Tornberg-Lennox
DESCRIPTION:Come and explore nature in a new way at this Herbalism Walk and Medicine-Making Day led by Elena Tornberg-Lennox. \nYou will discover the history and medicinal uses of plants\, deepening your appreciation and understanding of them and how humans have connected to them throughout time. \nAs we move into autumn\, when the days are cooler and the nights are crisper\, the abundance of the natural world invites us to explore her gifts. So many of the plants we walk past every day have medicinal properties\, with some that might surprise you. Even bramble leaves and the humble nettle offer incredible health benefits\, while haws can support the heart and joints and rosehips contain around 40 times more vitamin C than oranges. \nThroughout the session\, Elena will share her ecological and herbal knowledge as you explore a different way of connecting with nature. Together\, you will walk the land\, identifying medicinal plants\, discussing their uses and learning how to forage for them respectfully. You’ll then enjoy a tasting of wild herbal teas before making your own hedgerow syrup\, created over the firepit\, to take home. \nTimings: \n\n10am: Arrival and welcome\n11.30am: Walk of site\n1pm: Lunch (please bring own)\n2pm: Medicine Making Session over the firepit\n4pm: Session ends\n\nRefreshments will be provided throughout the day \nAbout your guide\, Elena Tornberg-Lennox: \nElena is a herbalist\, ecologist\, storyteller and rewilder\, and loves to help people find ways to connect with the land and nature. Elena believes deeply in finding practical ways to work with the land\, and honouring the natural rhythms and processes of the natural world. \nElena says\, “By learning to work with plants\, we notice more and create a deep connection with the world around us. To be able to name and understand a plant creates a relationship that will last. What we know\, we can protect. Rewilding also needs us to rewild ourselves\, and understand ourselves as a part of nature”.
