SUMMARY:Twilight Beaver Watch
DESCRIPTION:This is a rare opportunity to join a small group for a twilight beaver watch and experience the magic of seeing these remarkable animals living wild. You’ll enjoy a peaceful and immersive evening watching wildlife emerge as day turns to night. \nOur thriving beaver family has really made themselves at home on site at Heal Somerset\, establishing an impressive lodge and building a network of dams. They have been busy transforming the landscape in extraordinary ways and they are creating thriving wetlands that support a wealth of wildlife\, improve water quality and increase biodiversity. \nFull disclosure: beavers are often seen from the viewing area\, so there’s a good chance that you’ll see at least one\, but we can’t guarantee it. But even if you don’t\, you will learn lots about them as well as witness their hard work whilst spending valuable time in nature. \nEach beaver watch will be carefully led by experienced wildlife guide Nick Patel. His respectful approach will minimise disturbance as the beavers’ wellbeing is always the priority. We ask that all attendees follow this approach. \nAbout your workshop leader\, Nick Patel: \nNick is a tour guide\, conservationist\, naturalist and birder and is passionate about helping to protect\, create and maintain British wildlife. A lifelong Birdwatcher\, and former Nature reserve Warden\, Nick has devoted his life to shouting about how amazing our native biodiversity is and just why we should care for it. \nNick says “Having led tours here at Heal Somerset for two years now\, I’ve witnessed first-hand the speed at which nature has already made a comeback. I’m super passionate about showing everyone who visits the site the wealth of wildlife bouncing back\, including some really beautiful species and fabulous rewilding habitats.”

SUMMARY:Wild Guardians at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:A relaxed\, monthly volunteer gathering to support nature restoration. Rooted in a spirit of community and curiosity. Join us to learn new skills\, spend time in nature\, and connect with like-minded folk. \nCome and spend a few hours in nature doing something that matters. No experience is necessary\, just a willingness to get stuck in and try something new. \n42 Acres has been a rewilding nature reserve for over a decade and is species-rich. Join us to connect with the natural world through hands-on activities from wildlife surveying\, to tending habitats\, and slowing down with nature photography. \nSessions run on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm (except in May when we are meeting at 8pm for bats and beavers!). There will be time to connect\, wander\, and simply be outside. If you’re up for it\, you’re welcome to join in for a wild swim too. At 1pm we’ll stop and share a simple lunch together\, provided by 42 Acres. \n____ \nSun 31 May: Bats and Beavers: \nPart of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count\, with guest expert Keith Ball (Somerset Bat Group). Please note: this is an evening session\, running 8–10pm\, as we head out for some gentle nocturnal exploration. \nSun 28 June: Hazel Dormice & Reading Nature: \nJoin us to create footprint tunnels for hazel dormice to discover whether this protected species (that have been spotted on neighbouring land!) exist at 42. We’ll also take a relaxed walk around the 11-acre lake\, recording observations and contributing to global biodiversity databases. We’ll look for signs of beaver activity\, tracks\, and birdlife\, and finish at the white stork enclosure\, part of our species reintroduction work. Guided by Lynne Sewell (Sustainable Witham)\, Robyn Caple (@nestandnettleecology)\, and Lisa Hawes (42 Acres). \nSun 26 July: Butterflies\, Dragonflies + Pond Dipping: \nPart of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme\, one of the longest-running insect surveys in the world. With guest expert Fred Giles\, we’ll explore the world of butterflies\, dragonflies\, and other insects\, with a chance to get closer through pond dipping and observation. \nSun 30 Aug: Reptiles and Botanics: \nJoin us to check reptile refuges across the site\, helping us understand which species are present (and which are likely absent). Or take a creative route\, help us start making a handmade herbarium for the site while learning how to “key out”\, a step by step process used to identify unknown plant species. \nSun 27 Sep: Trees\nDiscover the stories of Britain’s ancient and veteran trees\, and learn how to identify and photograph them in their late-summer form. \nSun 25 Oct: Harvest Mice and Native Fungi:\nHelp us ascertain whether harvest mice are present on the land at 42\, we’ll search together for their tiny nests. We’ll also explore the world of fungi\, discovering what’s emerging across the site at this time of year. \nPlease Note: \n– Gloves and wellies/boots are necessary.\n– If you have issues with mobility please let us know before signing up\, we will do our best to accommodate.\n– Please book only if you’re committed to attending and staying for the entire session.\n– If you become unable to attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else.\n– If rain stops play\, we have a Plan B and will aim to move inside to create bee bricks and/or a herbarium together.\n– Please speak with your licensed medical health professional if you have any health conditions or are pregnant.\n– As much as we love our four-legged friends\, we can not allow dogs on this experience. \nLocation & Arrival: \nPlease arrive 10 minutes before we begin. SUMMARY:Medicinal Mushrooms Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to safely identify & sustainably grow\, harvest & preserve medicinal mushrooms & extract their medicine. Create your own wild mushroom ‘medicine cabinet’ and inoculate your own log to take home & fruit in your garden for years to come. \nDuring this full-day workshop\, you’ll discover native\, wild\, medicinal mushrooms growing at 42 Acres and in the local southwest area. \nFor the first half of the day\, you’ll be heading out on a guided foraging walk; illuminating the incredible world of medicinal fungi that we commonly walk past. You’ll learn the key features needed to safely identify each mushroom and where each is commonly found. \nIn the afternoon you will be creating your own wild mushroom ‘medicine cabinet.’ You will learn how to safely preserve your mushrooms and extract their medicine for use all year round\, in yours and your loved ones lives – for a host of illness and preventative uses. This medicine is often very expensive and our shared vision is to support you to be able to do it yourself safely. Our intention is for you to feel empowered to harvest your own mushroom medicine cabinet and grow your own medicinal mushrooms. \nYou will also learn the ancient technique of mushroom inoculation – a highly sustainable method that mimics nature and produces mushrooms dense in nutrients that are hard to find from other food sources. Take home your own inoculated log – where it will fruit in your garden for years to come. \nWhat to expect: \nLearn about the properties of Turkey Tail\, Shiitake\, Lions Mane and Artist Conk\, most of which are native strains to the UK and cultivated from the wild here at 42 Acres.\nBe guided through the basics of drying and making tinctures.\nLearn the technique of mushroom inoculation – the world’s oldest recorded farming method.\nLearn more about 42 Acres’ wild-tending principles and our pioneering agriwilding projects. \nWhat is included: \nThis workshop includes a tasty lunch from our “Soil to Gut” menu – you will eat food grown on the land you’re walking. Wild teas will be provided throughout the session. \nOur session will open with a guided meditation and a check-in\, in the spirit of our vision to help ourselves attune to living in harmony with nature. We believe that connecting in this way encourages deeper connection and mindful working practices\, for both us and the land. \nThis is a unique and hands-on day ideal for any fungi lover or wild medicine cabinet enthusiast!
