DESCRIPTION:The Black Swan Arts Open 2026 brings together artists and makers working across all disciplines and media\, selected by a distinguished panel from across the contemporary arts\, alongside a range of generous prizes and awards. \nThe Open is Black Swan Arts’ flagship exhibition\, bringing together artists at different stages of their careers from the region and beyond. Founded in 1986\, Black Swan Arts has played a central role in Frome’s cultural life for four decades\, and this year’s Open marks the organisation’s 40th anniversary. \nThe 2026 Open has been selected by a carefully chosen panel of guest judges\, independent of the organisation’s Board and Programming Group\, bringing a thoughtful\, open-minded and rigorous approach to the selection process. \nSelected works will be exhibited in the Long Gallery at Black Swan Arts from Saturday 8th August to Sunday 27th September 2026. \n2026 Selection Panel\nDea Vanagan – Senior Director\, Hauser & Wirth Somerset\nGemma Brace – Head of Exhibitions\, Arnolfini\nMolly Martin – Artist and Writer\nMartyn Cross – Artist\nHamish Young – Artist and President of the RWA \nPrizes include:\n£1\,500 First Prize supported by Hauser & Wirth Somerset\n£500 Lynda Pelly Prize for an Artist Under 30\nBlack Swan Arts Solo Exhibition\nRabley Gallery Print Prize\nJ.M. DESCRIPTION:A brand new festival is coming to Frome this September\, bringing together authors\, ideas and conversations exploring our connection with nature\, the world around us and each other. \nTaking place from 19-20 September at RISE\, Consider the Wondrous is a new collaboration between Tina Gaisford-Waller of Winstone’s Hunting Raven Books and author and bookseller Gareth Howell-Jones\, the official bookseller at Hay Festival. \nThe weekend will feature a brilliant mix of talks and events with authors including Cal Flyn\, Horatio Clare\, Stephen Moss\, Dara McAnulty and Michael Malay\, alongside local favourites Julian Hight and Ian Ballamy\, and actor and ecologist David Oakes. \nFind the full programme of events here.

SUMMARY:Welcome to The ForEm
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to The ForEm – Part fête. Part exhibition. Part experiment. \nThe ForEm asks deceptively simple questions: \nWhat makes Frome\, Frome? And who gets to decide what comes next? \nThe ForEm invites people to explore the stories they tell about the town: its independence\, creativity and community spirit\, and also its challenges\, contradictions and changing identities. Expect performances\, films\, artworks\, games\, community stories and a warm invitation to question ways of thinking\, feeling\, dreaming\, sensing – and making sense – of the town we share. \nThe ForEm is the commissioned work of Frome-based artist Kate Keara Pelen\, developed through her collaboration with the University of Glasgow’s Civic Imaginary Partnerships research project. It turns a year of research into a space for the town to play with\, challenge and add to what we have found. \nFree performances: \nTom Spencer will guide an unconventional gallery tour through the artefacts\, stories\, myths and characters of the town. \nMartin Scott – bringing together Town Crier\, Cheese Lord and long-time observer of Frome life – will invite audiences to spin the wheel of Frome Roulette\, triggering different stories about the town’s civic tribes\, traditions and archetypes. \nPlus: \nThe Community Loom designed by Claire Orpin and Tamara Jones. \nFilms made by Frome residents through the community film project led by Dr John Sealey of Fabian’s Films (shown on a loop in the gallery all day and an official screening and Q&A between 5-6pm) \nDrop in\, disagree\, contribute\, play. \nhttps://civicimaginaries.gla.ac.uk/welcome-to-the-forem/
