SUMMARY:Wild Guardians at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:A relaxed\, monthly volunteer gathering to support nature restoration. Rooted in a spirit of community and curiosity. Join us to learn new skills\, spend time in nature\, and connect with like-minded folk. \nCome and spend a few hours in nature doing something that matters. No experience is necessary\, just a willingness to get stuck in and try something new. \n42 Acres has been a rewilding nature reserve for over a decade and is species-rich. Join us to connect with the natural world through hands-on activities from wildlife surveying\, to tending habitats\, and slowing down with nature photography. \nSessions run on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm (except in May when we are meeting at 8pm for bats and beavers!). There will be time to connect\, wander\, and simply be outside. If you’re up for it\, you’re welcome to join in for a wild swim too. At 1pm we’ll stop and share a simple lunch together\, provided by 42 Acres. \n____ \nSun 31 May: Bats and Beavers: \nPart of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count\, with guest expert Keith Ball (Somerset Bat Group). Please note: this is an evening session\, running 8–10pm\, as we head out for some gentle nocturnal exploration. \nSun 28 June: Hazel Dormice & Reading Nature: \nJoin us to create footprint tunnels for hazel dormice to discover whether this protected species (that have been spotted on neighbouring land!) exist at 42. We’ll also take a relaxed walk around the 11-acre lake\, recording observations and contributing to global biodiversity databases. We’ll look for signs of beaver activity\, tracks\, and birdlife\, and finish at the white stork enclosure\, part of our species reintroduction work. Guided by Lynne Sewell (Sustainable Witham)\, Robyn Caple (@nestandnettleecology)\, and Lisa Hawes (42 Acres). \nSun 26 July: Butterflies\, Dragonflies + Pond Dipping: \nPart of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme\, one of the longest-running insect surveys in the world. With guest expert Fred Giles\, we’ll explore the world of butterflies\, dragonflies\, and other insects\, with a chance to get closer through pond dipping and observation. \nSun 30 Aug: Reptiles and Botanics: \nJoin us to check reptile refuges across the site\, helping us understand which species are present (and which are likely absent). Or take a creative route\, help us start making a handmade herbarium for the site while learning how to “key out”\, a step by step process used to identify unknown plant species. \nSun 27 Sep: Trees\nDiscover the stories of Britain’s ancient and veteran trees\, and learn how to identify and photograph them in their late-summer form. \nSun 25 Oct: Harvest Mice and Native Fungi:\nHelp us ascertain whether harvest mice are present on the land at 42\, we’ll search together for their tiny nests. We’ll also explore the world of fungi\, discovering what’s emerging across the site at this time of year. \nPlease Note: \n– Gloves and wellies/boots are necessary.\n– If you have issues with mobility please let us know before signing up\, we will do our best to accommodate.\n– Please book only if you’re committed to attending and staying for the entire session.\n– If you become unable to attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else.\n– If rain stops play\, we have a Plan B and will aim to move inside to create bee bricks and/or a herbarium together.\n– Please speak with your licensed medical health professional if you have any health conditions or are pregnant.\n– As much as we love our four-legged friends\, we can not allow dogs on this experience. \nLocation & Arrival: \nPlease arrive 10 minutes before we begin. SUMMARY:Frome Storytelling Circle – October session
DESCRIPTION:Frome Storytelling Circle is a monthly local group for practicing the art of traditional oral storytelling in a friendly\, relaxed setting. \nThe shapes of the stories may be old\, but the behaviours they describe and the lessons they teach are as common and as applicable nowadays as they ever were. Each teller has their own style and their own tone and they tell a given story in their own way. \nWe welcome all sorts of stories told from memory: folktales\, fairy tales\, myths\, legends\, contemporary and personal. Stories should be limited to 10 minutes\, and there is no need to book a slot in advance. \nAll tellers are welcome\, from experienced yarn spinners to newcomers who would like to have a try at this oldest art. \nListeners are very welcome – what is a story without an audience? There is no pressure to tell a story\, and we love welcoming good listeners into the space. \nAttendance is free\, though we welcome cash donations on the night to help cover the cost of room hire and poster printing. \nFrome Storytelling Circle is hosted and organised by Bridget\, Lesley\, Mike\, Ruth and Steph. We meet upstairs in The Three Swans pub – so grab a drink at the bar\, come up and join us.

SUMMARY:Wild Winter – A Gathering for Conscious Teams
DESCRIPTION:Across cultures\, winter is a season for turning inwards\, taking stock of what has been learned\, and trusting the unseen work happening beneath the surface. Christmas and New Year at 42 Acres reflects this ancient rhythm\, with time to slow down\, reflect on the year that has been\, and tend to the relationships that will carry the team forward. \nGather around the fire in our oak forest glade\, an ancient woodland that has offered sanctuary for 13 centuries\, make something of the land with your hands\, or build a living legacy in the landscape that will endure for decades to come. Come together around a long\, shared table for a unique wild winter lunch featuring ingredients organically-grown and wild-foraged right here. \nYour Day \nFor small local teams who want to celebrate differently\, this is a chance to come together with other like-minded organisations and make your Christmas gathering part of something bigger. \n10am: Everything at 42 begins with the land. We’re restoring ecosystems and discovering that\, as we heal the land\, we heal ourselves too. Gather around the fire\, an elemental ritual as old as time. A welcome drink of mulled apple juice lands you in this time and place\, these apples were grown just a few steps away. We’ll host a fireside experience designed to bring your team into deeper connection. \n11am: Choose your Wild Experience for your team\, designed to cultivate a deeper sense of belonging\, both with each other and with the natural world. \nWild Winter Crafting: Settle beside a roaring fire and work with natural materials from the land\, slowing down and making something together* \nFuture Orchard Grafting: Learn the ancient art of grafting and help create an apple orchard\, an environmental contribution has a life well beyond the day itself* \n1pm: Gather around a long\, shared table for Wild Winter Lunch\, served family-style and rooted in the land around you. \n3pm: Head home feeling nourished and connected. \n£95 per person \n—\n*Future Orchard Grafting \nLearn the ancient skill of grafting as your team creates a fledgling apple orchard. Take cuttings from our existing apple trees and graft them onto rootstock\, creating dozens of young fruit trees. \nThis hands-on experience builds practical skills\, encourages collaboration\, and connects to food resilience. These trees will continue to grow\, creating a living legacy for your team. \nWe invite you to name the orchard\, adding it to our map and official records. You’re welcome to revisit to plant out your trees\, and eventually picnic under their boughs. \nIndoors & Outdoors\, Moderate Effort \n*Wild Winter Crafting \nTry your hand at wild crafting by a roaring fire. Create a festive wreath to take home\, or a winter nature crown to wear to your private dining experience. \nWe’ll provide beautiful winter materials foraged from the land\, and guide you in creating something entirely your own. Work with nature\, express your style\, and see what emerges. \nCrown yourselves for dinner in your wild creation – some turn out beautiful\, some…quite ‘unexpected’\, all uniquely yours. Or make a festive wreath and take a little piece of 42 Acres home with you.

SUMMARY:Wet\, Wet\, Wet: Beaver and Human Wetlands of Heal Somerset
DESCRIPTION:Discover how humans and beavers are joining forces to restore vibrant wetland ecosystems at Heal Somerset. On this guided walk and talk with rewilding ranger Daniel Hill\, you will experience first-hand these developing wetlands and learn how dams\, ponds\, scrapes and more can shape water movement\, biodiversity\, and habitat recovery. Together you will explore how beaver activity and human intervention can complement each other to create healthier habitats\, cleaner water\, and climate-resilient ecosystems. \nAbout Daniel Hill \nAs the Rewilding Ranger at Heal Somerset\, Dan manages the site’s monitoring and land management programs. You can find him surveying for signs of beavers\, co-ordinating volunteer work parties\, or working with partners to deliver the hydrological restoration plan\, amongst a huge variety of other tasks. Dan’s passion for nature was sparked as a child growing up on an organic small holding in rural south Wales watching red kites soar above. His love of rewilding developed through volunteering with the RSPB on the Somerset Levels.
