SUMMARY:Peace Mandala Final Ritual – Tibetan Monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery
DESCRIPTION:Experience the final ritual when the peace mandala\, created by the monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery using millions of grains of coloured sand\, is dismantled and scattered into the waters of the River Frome. \nThe most intriguing and intricate example of the Vajrayana tradition of Tibetan Buddhism is the construction of the Sand Mandala. Made from millions of grains of coloured sand\, the image grows over a series of days until it can be visualised as the palace of the Buddha who visits our realm to bring wisdom\, compassion and peace. The initial dedication ceremony\, the construction and the final dismantling of the mandala are all part of this exhibition. The monks are highly qualified masters of mandala-making who have studied in the monastery since childhood. The final ceremony for the dismantling of the mandala takes place on Monday morning\, beginning with a blessing\, and concluding with a procession led by the monks to distribute the sand in running water. Return to the hall to collect some of the sand to take away as a memory of the mandala. \nVisits to the mandala and the final ceremony are free of charge with voluntary donations to Tashi Lhunpo Monastery to support the monks in their work. www.tashi-lhunpo.org.uk\nFree with donation \nThis event is part of Frome Festival.

We are very sorry that this Wellbeing Walk is not fully accessible but hope that we can use this to highlight the importance of a ramp being reinstated at Henley Way. Our artists have chosen to use this route because the longer way round via Jenson Button bridge isn’t accessible for them due to length.\n\n\nHome \n\n \n  \n  \nThis event is part of Frome Festival.

SUMMARY:Musicke in the Ayre – Silver Sounds of the Roman Seicento
DESCRIPTION:A delightful programme of early Baroque music from Rome\, with the voices of Maria Danishvar\, Jane Hunt and Philippa Neaverson soaring over Din Ghani’s archlute and baroque guitar in a happy hour of music that is intimate\, expressive\, and full of character — music that feels surprisingly direct\, even four hundred years on. \nMusicke in the Ayre’s contribution to the Festival’s 25th Anniversary features music by Rossi\, Carissimi\, Landi and Kapsberger – oustanding composers associated with Rome and the powerful Papal dynasties whose patronage enabled the flowering of such talent and creativity. This was a time when composers began to experiment with ways of affecting the listener\, of touching the heart\, and lifting the spirit. \nDin Ghani formed Musicke in the Ayre fifteen years ago as a vehicle for exploring and performing the wonderful and extensive repertoire for voice and plucked string from the 16th and 17th centuries across Europe. He has been fortunate enough to work with a team of keen singers who share his enthusiam for this music; together they have benefited from coaching and encouragement from Dame Emma Kirkby\, Evelyn Tubb\, Michael Fields and the late David Miller\, among others. They have given over 190 performances across the UK and on the Continent. Maria\, Jane and Philippa are well-known locally as solo and choral singers; they have been key members of the team for over a decade. \nAs well as researching\, designing and directing all their programmes\, Din has also built most of the instruments he uses\, including the two used in this concert. \nThis event is part of Frome Festival.

SUMMARY:Fairfield Ethio-Jazz Project
DESCRIPTION:Frome’s finest contemporary musicians join forces with stars from across the South West in a unique musical tribute to the region’s historic residency of former Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I. Laura Jurd\, Will Gregory\, Martin Kolarides and other local luminaries explore Ethio-Jazz\, a unique fusion of the traditions of jazz and African music. \nFrom 1936-1941(43) HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I and the Royal Family lived in exile in Fairfield House\, Bath during Mussolini’s invasion of Ethiopia. After his return to Ethiopia a flourishing jazz scene emerged during the 1960s & 70s\, led by musicians such as Mulatu Astatke\, Hailu Mergia & Walias Band. \nToday Fairfield House\, Bath is a community social enterprise dedicated to preserving and celebrating HIM’s legacy www.fairfieldhousebath.co.uk. When Bath celebrated the 70th anniversary of HIM being awarded the Freedom of the City Fairfield House convened its Ethio-Jazz Project to support those celebrations. \nFairfield Ethio-Jazz Project’s debut album ‘Bath Ketema’ is released in 2026 by Kelston Records & Severn Songs both digitally and on vinyl (also featuring Adrian Utley and Harriet Riley). \nThis event is part of Frome Festival.
