DESCRIPTION:Party At The End Of The World – A Celebration Of The Life Of Phil Moakes \nThe Cheese and Grain was deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Phil Moakes\, former Chair of the Cheese and Grain Board of Trustees\, in 2025. \nPhil played a pivotal role in the development of the Cheese and Grain and was instrumental in securing the venue’s long-term future during some of its most challenging years. His dedication\, leadership\, and belief in the venue and its staff helped shape it into the vibrant cultural hub it is today. \nBeyond his work with the Cheese and Grain\, Phil was the founder of Frome FM\, a community radio station that continues to enrich local life. He went on to launch Visual Radio Arts\, giving a platform to hundreds of artists and supporting their work. He also served as a Somerset County Councillor\, working tirelessly to represent and champion the interests of the local community. \nIn celebration of Phil’s life\, we are honoured to be hosting a special event\, “Party At The End Of The World\,” alongside his family and friends. \nThe evening will feature a fantastic line-up including The Utopia Strong\, Arch Garrison\, Richard\, Chantelle & Amy\, Kavus Torabi\, The Jolly Rotter\, Hodmadoddery\, Sara Vian and will be hosted by Martin Dimery. \nWe remain profoundly grateful for Phil’s vision\, support\, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind\, not only within the Cheese and Grain\, but across the wider Frome community. \nIn celebration of his life and in honour of this legacy\, all funds raised from the event will be donated to support the vital work of Fair Frome.

You’re welcome to drop in for as little or as long as you like – everyone is invited to take part in the activities at the heart of the Westway Shopping Centre. \nThis event is a collaboration between the Civic Imaginary Partnerships project and local artists Claire Orpin and Tamara Jones. Civic Imaginary Partnerships is a four-year research project led by the University of Glasgow\, exploring how people think\, feel\, dream and sense the futures of the places where they live. Our partners in Frome are Frome Town Council and Edventure. You do not need to give your name or any personal information to take part. DESCRIPTION:As part of this year’s Skate Jam event with Frome Skatepark Project\, there’s an opportunity to have a skating lesson with an experienced teacher. There are four half hour slots\, divided by age as follows: \n\n10am: Age 6 to 11 years\n10.30am: 6 to 11 years\n11am: 12 to 16 years\n11.30pm: 12 to 16 years\n\nThere is very limited room for walk-ups on the day\, within the age groups listed above\, but pre-booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. \nBring your own skateboard. Please note that helmets and protective equipment are compulsory: if you do not wear them you cannot take part. We will have limited kit to lend on the day.  \nAlthough every care will be taken for your safety\, and there will be a first aider at the event\, all skaters skate at their own risk and will be asked to sign a disclaimer to that effect before taking part.

DESCRIPTION:Come along and learn more about nature-led recovery at Heal’s first rewilding site\, Heal Somerset.\nHeal Somerset began its recovery from its ecologically depleted state at the beginning of 2023 and nature here is already beginning to bounce back. This tour is a unique opportunity to spend time with Heal’s co-founder and acting CEO\, Jan Stannard\, who will take you around part of our beautiful site on mown paths. \nYou will learn more around the wider context of rewilding\, including the reasons we need it and the benefits it brings to nature\, the climate and to our own wellbeing. Jan will talk about the rewilding principles that Heal follows and give you an insight into some of our plans for the land\, particularly the interventions we’re considering and our plans for future livestock introductions. The group will also hear about some of the changes we have seen on the site already\, including the very welcome appearance of wild-living beavers. \nYou will also hopefully experience some of the varied wildlife we have on site\, but even if the creatures are elusive on the day\, we know you will still find the site a beautiful\, peaceful and restorative place to be. \nYour tour will finish with refreshments in our 17th century farmhouse where conversations about rewilding and Heal can continue.

Grown ups only though sorry\, no children or babies. \nQigong (pronounced chee-gong) is a gentle mind–body practice from Chinese tradition that combines slow\, flowing movement\, breathing\, and focused attention to support health and wellbeing.\nIt’s often described as working with your “qi” (energy)—helping it move smoothly through the body.\nSessions can include:\nSoft\, rhythmic movements (similar to slow dance or Tai Chi)\nBreathwork to calm the nervous system\nStillness or meditation\nPeople use Qigong to improve balance\, flexibility\, relaxation\, and overall energy\, and it’s accessible to most abilities—even seated. \nJayne James is a Qigong instructor with a background in musculoskeletal health within the NHS\, which enhances and informs her approach to practice.\nHer practice is rooted in empowering individuals to take an active role in their wellbeing through breath\, movement and awareness.\nPracticing for over six years with a Grand Master and certified through intensive instructor programmes\, she guides flowing sessions that calm the mind\, release tension and restore balance within the body and emotions.\nShe currently teaches in her home village of Nunney supporting a diverse range of clients in cultivating resilience\, clarity and a deeper connection to themselves through this powerful\, meditative practice.

DESCRIPTION:Frome is getting a new skatepark – and we want it to be for everyone! \nAlthough there has been an increase in girls using skateparks in recent years\, many still report feeling excluded or outnumbered. \nThe session on Thursday 7 May is the first of a series to ensure our new skatepark is open to all. \nThis first session is for girls aged 11 to 16 only; future sessions will be tailored to other ages/groups. \nExperienced instructor Dave Lea will help you learn or improve skating skills. DESCRIPTION:On the first of May as part of the Frome Connects project and the ongoing weekly “Dress Up Fridays”\, we are welcoming the Coat of Hopes to the Boyle Cross in the centre of Frome.\nThe Coat of Hopes is a patchwork coat on an ongoing walking pilgrimage through the UK towards the end of the climate and ecological emergency.\nIt has been made by and worn and walked by many hundreds of people on a journey on foot of over 2000 miles so far. It carries people’s hopes for the places they live\, sewn into the blanket patches of which it is made.\nAll who encounter it are invited to wear it and (whilst the Coat song is sung) take a moment to be conscious of themselves at this time\, standing in connection with all those who have made or worn the Coat before them and with the life and land it has witnessed on its way.\nWe will meet at the fountain to honour the coat and all it stands for – connecting with ourselves\, our community and the planet. \nTake a look at a short video about the Coat of Hopes here.
