DESCRIPTION:Ben Ottewell is a British musician best known as the gravelly-voiced frontman of the indie rock band Gomez. Born on June 23\, 1976\, in Chesterfield\, England\, Ottewell began his musical journey at a young age\, inspired by his father’s eclectic record collection. In 1996\, he co-founded Gomez with Ian Ball\, Tom Gray\, Paul Blackburn\, and Olly Peacock while studying at university in Sheffield. \nGomez quickly gained attention with their debut album\, “Bring It On\,” released in 1998\,which won the Mercury Music Prize. Ottewell’s distinctive vocals and songwriting contributed to the band’s unique sound\, characterized by a blend of blues\, folk\, and rock elements. The band went on to release several critically acclaimed albums\, including”Liquid Skin” (1999) and “In Our Gun” (2002) . Throughout Gomez’s career\, Ottewell’s soulful voice and introspective lyrics resonated with fans\, earning him a dedicated following. \nHis solo career saw him exploring a more stripped-down acoustic sound\, showcasing his raw talent and emotive storytelling. In 2011\, Ottewell released his debut solo album\, “Shapes & Shadows\,” followed by”Rattlebag” in 2014 and ‘A Man Apart’ in 2017. The talk will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. \nAs Kim Willis drifts from the traditional path of marriage and motherhood\, she yearns for a new set of stories to light her way. Here\, she is pulled towards the source of the Severn\, hearing whispers of ancient matriarchs: shape-shifting enchantresses\, scaly nymphs and goddesses who once commanded our lands. These are no fair maidens\, but powerful warrioresses and animalistic beasts\, snaking along the edges of watery places where we meet the otherworld in the shadows. \nAs she uncovers the ancient myths hidden in the rugged landscapes of the British Isles\, the stories of women like Arianrhod\, Melusine and Cerridwen awaken a forgotten power. Journeying from the Severn to Skye\, Eryri to Northumberland\, Kim discovers new magic in the tales of old\, unveiling forgotten truths about grief and healing\, while charting a new course through sisterhood and sexuality\, fertility and freedom. Through the threads of folklore\, history and landscape\, Kim identifies a better way of being for modern women\, and crafts a new vision for Britain where women are – and always were – a force of nature. \nKim Willis has spent twenty years working as a strategist\, journalist and experience designer\, with a focus on gender\, creativity and story. \nBooks will be for sale at the event and Kim will be available for dedications.

DESCRIPTION:Indie rock icons Maxïmo Park celebrate 20 years since the release of their Mercury Prize-nominated breakthrough debut album “A Certain Trigger” with a special one-off show at the Cheese and Grain. \nThe Mercury Prize-nominated record\, produced by Paul Epworth and released on Warp\, arrived with a trio of iconic singles in ‘Apply Some Pressure’\, ‘Graffiti’\, and ‘Going Missing’\, each of which still define the indie disco experience for many to this day. Released at the time into a landscape soon to become dominated by ten-a-penny guitar bands\, with A Certain Trigger Maxïmo Park were the bookish\, livewire outsiders\, bursting with punk power\, pop sensibility and literary smarts. \nEven their signing to Warp records – a label predominantly known for its experimental and electronic roster at the time – suggested a band with its eyes set beyond the horizon. Almost immediately\, and certainly in the time since its release\, A Certain Trigger has installed itself as a scene staple\, and a curiosity of the 00s that packs as much power today as it did 20 years ago. \nLead singer Paul Smith says “Not many bands make it to a twentieth year together so we’re having a big celebration\, with a special 20th anniversary tour and by giving a fresh perspective to A Certain Trigger. Our first album remains dear to so many people\, and compiling archive material for the reissue has been like entering a time machine – thrilling\, but also a bit scary! Happily\, we think the music has more than stood the test of time\, and the tour\, where we’ll revisit many of the beloved older songs\, will be a joyful experience for both us and our audience. Playing live has always been at the heart of what we do\, and we still feel the same exhilaration stepping onto the stage as we did in the beginning\, but now with even more appreciation of the moment\, and the roar of the crowds.”

DESCRIPTION:Jim Ghedi hails from Sheffield\, South Yorkshire and although clearly well versed in the history of folk music\, he stands out as a potential torch bearer for a new generation of respectful yet experimental performers. \nAs his music develops away from his previous records ‘A Hymn for Ancient Land’ (2018) & ‘In the Furrows of Common Place’ (2021) released on Basin Rock record label and his collaborative duo records with welsh guitarist Toby Hay released on Topic Records (2023)\, his sound emulates a more brooding\, dark and electronic world which is mirrored in his piercing lyrics and singing. Gather in our forest glade for our signature vegetarian wild dining experience. Your meal will be cooked over an open fire with nourishing ingredients organically-grown and wild-foraged on this land.\nGo for a wild swim in the beaver-filled lake\, and relax in the wood-fired sauna. Or simply take time and space to rest and restore on land that has been allowed to do the same. \nYou’re welcome to do as much or as little as you like:\n– Roam the 173 acres of our land – home to millions of lives.\n– Wild swim in our 7-acre lake or take out our rowboat\, SUP board\, or canoe. (Please note these activities are at your own risk – there is no lifeguard).\n– Look out for beaver\, otter\, wild boar\, hare\, deer and a multitude of birds.\n– Explore our rewilded spaces; woodland mushroom farm; permaculture garden; edible ornamental walled garden; species re-introduction projects; and secret treehouse. Slow Sundays at 42 Acres Retreat are all about connection – with yourself\, with others\, and with nature.\nWild swimming\, a wood-fired sauna\, woodland walks\, and incredible food grown on the land itself – all shared around a long table in the woods\, with birdsong overhead and an eclectic mix of people from all walks of life. It’s a really well-thought-out setup. Simple\, but intentional. The team were welcoming\, knowledgeable (beavers\, storks\, permaculture\, mushroom farms\, soil-to-gut) and clearly passionate about what they’re building.
