DESCRIPTION:Highly influential post-punk/indie band\, The Monochrome Set are to play in Frome\, at the Tree House. Loved by artists such as The Smiths\, Franz Ferdinand and Blur and covered by such diverse acts as Iggy Pop and Tracey Thorn\, this is a unique opportunity to see this legendary act at a small venue in Frome. \nThe band features original Monochrome Set members Bid (guitar/vocals) and Andy Warren (bass) with Athen Ayren on keyboards and Stephen Gilchrist on drums. \nThe Monochrome Set formed in 1978\, and were heavily influential in the post-punk scene that evolved after the initial scorched earth of punk. \nThe band’s early releases were on the legendary Rough Trade Label before signing with Virgin offshoot Din Disc. They also released several albums on the Cherry Red label\, making a notable appearance on that labels’ well known “Pillows and Prayers” compilation.\nThough The Monochrome Set split in 1985 the next decade saw several reunions for both live gigs and further studio recordings. After a hiatus of over a decade the band reformed full time in 2010 and have since toured all over the UK\, Europe\, Japan and the USA\, whilst also releasing eight new\, critically acclaimed\, studio albums. \nNow in their 48th year\, they are beginning a new series of gigs promoting their latest album and playing songs old and new. \nCo-founder and ever-present member of Yeovil-based indie pop band The Chesterfields\, Simon Chesterfield returns with a new pop band and new pop music. A seven inch single will be released by Spinout Nuggets in December. \nSimon Chesterfield’s eponymous debut album was released by German label Legere Recordings in October 2024\, a 10 inch vinyl album featuring six of Simon’s compositions reimagined as an orchestral performance. This was followed by a 7 inch single ‘Last Train To Christmas’ released by the Dutch label Snowflakes Christmas Single Club in November 2024\, landing somewhere between the orchestral sound of the 10 inch and the jangle pop of The Chesterfields. \nSimon’s new band line-up features Billy Shinbone (Neville Staple band\, The Sinclairs) on guitar and vocals\, Joe Atkinson (Donovan\, The Rhynes) on keyboards and vocals\, Wayne Higgins (John Parish band\, Radio Flyer) on bass guitar\, and producer Ben Scott Turner (i-nichi\, Evil Owl) on drums. \nPlease note this is an 18+ all standing event\, and the venue is accessed by stairs with no lift. Using contrasting influences such as Bauhaus\, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and The Pogues along with Howlin’ Wolf\, Loretta Lynn (the band covers her classic Fist City) and Bessie Smith\, the Heathen Apostles have created a style of music that will conjure both angels and demons\, and will enlighten a darkened soul. \nForming the band together in 2013\, Mather Louth (Radio Noir) and rock n roll veteran Chopper Franklin (The Cramps\, Mau Maus\, Nick Curran & the Lowlifes) quickly uncovered a mutual appreciation for murder balladry\, Americana\, and memento mori. The landscape was further tilled with the addition of Luis Mascaro on violin. \nTheir 6 critically acclaimed albums\, along with their many EPs and singles (their release The Fall was named Best EP of 2018 by Folk n Rock magazine)\, capture the essence of the Heathen Apostles modus operandi: Southern Gothic Americana imagery surrounded by haunting\, minor-chord melodies\, musical influences including Gothic Roots music\, Bluegrass\, Blues\, and Gypsy Jazz\, all deftly bound together by the band’s dark and sometimes brooding sense of a bygone age. \nMost recently\, the band completed tours of both mainland Europe as well as the UK in support of their latest release\, The In Between\, with plans to return for two tours in 2026 in support of their forthcoming EP. \nPlease note this is an 18+ all-standing event\, and the venue is accessed by stairs with no lift. In 1985\, Timmy was offered the chance to present a spin-off of Wide Awake Club\, called Wacaday. The programme was characterised by games such as the now classic “Mallett’s Mallet” \nSince then Timmy has hosted many successful shows and regularly makes guest appearances on other programmes where his entertaining opinions\, loud looks and good humour make him a popular guest. \nWith West End show producer Andrew Lloyd Webber\, Timmy Mallett formed the “band” Bombalurina\, reaching number 1 in the official UK charts whilst topping the charts in more than a dozen countries around the world. He’s worked with George Martin and featured in Skepta’s music video for the hit song\, ‘Rolex Sweep’ accompanying Skepta at the MOBO awards. \nTimmy is an accomplished artist who has had his work exhibited at various art galleries; enjoys cult status among students and young adults\, has sat on every seat at Man Utd and City; owns over 87 pairs of specs; built a pole house on the great barrier reef\, cycled thousands of miles around the coastline of England and Ireland. These artists will share the stage with Eliza\, honouring and celebrating Martin’s immense legacy and musical back catalogue. \nThis evening will present a rolling cast of admirers\, colleagues and surprise guests\, performing an entirely new set featuring some of Martin’s best loved work from all eras of his career\, spanning from his debut to final albums\, via Waterson:Carthy and beyond. \nMartin Carthy is a legendary ballad singer and guitarist who has influenced generations of artists\, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon\, while Eliza has been twice-nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and a multiple-award winner at the BBC Radio Two Folk awards. \nIn recognition of his illustrious career Martin was recently shortlisted for the 2025 Mercury Prize for his wonderful new solo record Transform Me Then Into A Fish. This album both marks his 84th birthday in May 2025\, and offers a full circle moment in his music journey as he revisits material from his very first (eponymous) solo record released in 1965. \nWith a pure silken voice and lyrics that inspire and captivate\, Martha Tilston has developed a successful musical career with a large and loyal following worldwide. \nShe has played on some of the world’s most prestigious stages and festivals\, recorded and released several critically acclaimed albums\, gained a nomination for BBC best newcomer\, appeared as a guest vocalist for Zero 7\, toured internationally and worked with the some of the world’s most inspiring musicians. \nThe past few years have seen Martha venture in to the world of film making\, gaining nominations for best arts film for The Clifftop Sessions and recently releasing her first feature film (with an accompanying Soundtrack Album) – The Tape – which is garnering much praise and excitement.
