SUMMARY:Rewilding in Action: A Tour of Heal Somerset with Heal Co-Founder Jan Stannard
DESCRIPTION:Come along and learn more about nature-led recovery at Heal’s first rewilding site\, Heal Somerset.\nHeal Somerset began its recovery from its ecologically depleted state at the beginning of 2023 and nature here is already beginning to bounce back. This tour is a unique opportunity to spend time with Heal’s co-founder and acting CEO\, Jan Stannard\, who will take you around part of our beautiful site on mown paths. \nYou will learn more around the wider context of rewilding\, including the reasons we need it and the benefits it brings to nature\, the climate and to our own wellbeing. Jan will talk about the rewilding principles that Heal follows and give you an insight into some of our plans for the land\, particularly the interventions we’re considering and our plans for future livestock introductions. The group will also hear about some of the changes we have seen on the site already\, including the very welcome appearance of wild-living beavers. \nYou will also hopefully experience some of the varied wildlife we have on site\, but even if the creatures are elusive on the day\, we know you will still find the site a beautiful\, peaceful and restorative place to be. \nYour tour will finish with refreshments in our 17th century farmhouse where conversations about rewilding and Heal can continue.

DESCRIPTION:A gentle\, welcoming community event creating space to talk openly about grief and loss\, hear lived experiences\, ask questions\, and connect with others through conversation\, music and food. Do you ever wish we could have more open conversations about grief\, loss and bereavement? Would you like to understand more about what happens when someone dies\, or how to support yourself\, or others\, through times of change\, uncertainty and loss? Are you curious about what helps people feel less alone in their grief? \nThis gentle\, welcoming event creates space to talk openly about grief and to challenge the stigma that often surrounds it. Through short talks\, small-group conversations\, lived stories\, creative experiences and shared food\, we explore how grief is lived and supported and supported by community\, alongside some of the challenges we can face. There will be opportunities to hear people’s personal experiences of loss and what has helped them through\, alongside practical and emotional perspectives on bereavement. \nThe event is designed to be relaxed and supportive. You can drop in at any point and you are equally welcome to stay for the whole event. Whether you are personally affected by grief\, curious to learn more\, or working locally with people around loss and bereavement\, you are warmly invited. \nAlongside the conversations\, there will be a warming lunch of soup provided by The Good Heart (£3 per cup)\, plenty of tea and cake\, singing from Companion Voices\, and spaces to reflect. We will be displaying the Somerset Speak Their Name Memorial Quilt and the beautiful tree mural created collaboratively at last year’s event.

We take it for granted. \nBut it took over ten years for town leaders to agree that Frome needed piped drinking water in the 1870s. Learn why people denied that a clean water supply was needed. Surely it was obvious? \nDiscover how our predecessors managed to provide water for their families\, for drinking\, cooking and washing. There are visible traces around our town.\nAccess to clean water is vital for health. How can we ensure drinking water is freely available to all in our town today? \nThis special evening is a first-ever collaboration between the Kindness Festival and the Frome Society. It will consist of a presentation followed by an interval\, discussion and Q&A. Wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase. It will also be possible to participate online.

DESCRIPTION:An interactive workshop inviting you to rethink self-care through kindness\, compassion\, and a more human understanding of wellbeing. \nSelf-care is meant to help us feel better. Yet for many of us\, it has increasingly become another area of pressure\, something we should be doing “properly\,” keeping up with\, or fixing ourselves through. \nThis interactive workshop offers a different way in. \nLed by wellbeing writer\, podcaster and coach Claire Fitzsimmons\, this session invites you to explore what wellbeing looks like when it’s rooted in kindness\, compassion\, and curiosity rather than self-improvement or constant striving. Instead of asking what needs to change\, we’ll gently explore what needs care. \nThrough guided reflection\, conversation\, and simple\, accessible exercises\, you’ll be supported to rethink your relationship with self-care itself\, widening it beyond routines\, rules\, or trends\, and reconnecting it to the very real experience of being a person in the world today. \nThis workshop is for anyone who feels overwhelmed by wellbeing advice\, disconnected from themselves\, or just unsure whether the way they’ve been taught to “look after themselves” actually works for them. \nYou’ll leave with: \n\n\nA more compassionate understanding of what self-care can be \n\n\nGreater clarity about what supports your emotional and mental wellbeing \n\n\nReflections and ideas you can return to in everyday life \n\n\nA sense of self-trust that doesn’t rely on doing more or being better \n\n\nAs part of the Frome Kindness Festival\, this workshop explores kindness as something we can practise inwardly as well as outwardly. Because extending kindness to ourselves isn’t indulgent or selfish\, it’s often the foundation that allows us to meet the world\, and each other\, with more care. \n  \nABOUT CLAIRE FITZIMMONS \nClaire Fitzsimmons is the co-founder of If Lost\, Start Here\, a Somerset-based wellbeing company on a mission to help people get to a better place. As an ICF Associate Certified Coach and a certified emotions coaching practitioner\, Claire works with women navigating change\, burnout\, emotional overwhelm or simply a sense of feeling stuck. Her coaching sessions help people untangle what they’re feeling\, find clarity\, and build a sustainable wellbeing practice that fits who they are now. \nClaire’s writing on mental health\, emotions and midlife wellbeing has appeared in Happiful\, Breathe\, The Simple Things\, and others. DESCRIPTION:Explore the shadowy history of folk horror and its connection to ancient customs and rituals on the British Isles. Followed by Q&A. \nWhy do stories of ghosts\, witches and shapes in the night continue to haunt our imaginations? What is it about those ancient landscapes\, ruined churches\, mist-shrouded moors and lonely country lanes which so frequently feature in folk horror tales? In this talk\, Professor Marisa Linton uncovers the strange and compelling history of folk horror in the British Isles – from eerie legends rooted in pagan belief to tales shaped by the land itself\, its forgotten rituals\, sacred sites and unsettling past. \nTracing a line from whispered folklore through the chilling ghost stories of M. R. James and Arthur Conan Doyle\, and on to Gothic classics such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula\, we will explore how folk horror has continually reinvented fear for new generations. From The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General\, to modern stories of outsiders stumbling upon remote communities still ruled by “old ways\,” the genre has never stopped evolving. She is internationally recognised as a leading authority on the French Revolution\, the European Enlightenment and the history of women in France. \nAlongside her academic career\, she has delivered numerous public talks\, appeared on TV and radio\, and served as a historical adviser for TV. Either way\, you’re welcome to join this engaging introduction to rewilding with Jan Stannard\, co-founder and CEO of Heal. \nWe know that we need rewilding. England is one of the most nature-depleted countries ranking 234th in the world for its state of nature and one in six species are threatened with extinction. For us\, rewilding means giving nature what it needs to heal. Trees and wildflowers flourish\, wildlife comes back in abundance and vulnerable species begin to recover. \nIn this session Jan will talk about the key principles of rewilding\, discuss the approach taken by Heal and consider the very real impact upon nature\, climate change and our own wellbeing. She will also look at how these principles can translate into smaller spaces including gardens. \nAbout Jan Stannard \nJan Stannard is the co-founder and CEO of Heal. She moved into the charity sector after 40 years’ experience in business\, having served on company boards in the strategic communications and digital marketing sectors. She has led the charity since its launch in 2020 through a phase of rapid growth\, including the acquisition of the Heal Somerset site\, and is now starting to look at funding options for the next site.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday 21st May\, 7pm\, Frome Town Hall (in association with Winstone’s Books) \nWhen Catrin Osborne\, a multidisciplinary artist born in Trowbridge\, experienced menopause and it hit her “like a ton of bricks”\, she decided to find out what other women going through it were experiencing. \nHer quest took 3 years\, travelling all over the UK and asking people about the positives and negatives of this time in their lives. \nThe result was an exhibition which toured the UK with portraits and interviews\, and is now a photography book with stories from the women – in their words – published by Black Dog Press. \nIt acknowledges the first-hand experiences of 80 women and people who are experiencing menopause. All too often misunderstood by doctors and society\, they share their first-hand accounts of physical and mental symptoms\, of shame and isolation\, but also of discovery\, strength and newfound freedom. \n“Visionary and just bad ass” Shaena – participant. Here\, she is pulled towards the source of the Severn\, hearing whispers of ancient matriarchs: shape-shifting enchantresses\, scaly nymphs and goddesses who once commanded our lands. These are no fair maidens\, but powerful warrioresses and animalistic beasts\, snaking along the edges of watery places where we meet the otherworld in the shadows. \nAs she uncovers the ancient myths hidden in the rugged landscapes of the British Isles\, the stories of women like Arianrhod\, Melusine and Cerridwen awaken a forgotten power.
