SUMMARY:Badly Drawn Boy – Live & In Conversation
DESCRIPTION:It was June 2000 when The Hour of the Bewilderbeast won the Mercury Prize and announced the arrival of the beautifully idiosyncratic songwriting talent of Damon Gough aka Badly Drawn Boy. A record full of fragile honesty\, melodic brilliance and emotional depth\, it marked the beginning of a career that would prove as unpredictable as it was enduring. \nOver the years\, Badly Drawn Boy has released a string of acclaimed albums\, including Have You Fed The Fish?\, One Plus One Is One\, Born In The UK\, and It’s What I’m Thinking Part 1: Photographing Snowflakes\, each charting new emotional and musical territory. Alongside these came celebrated film soundtracks\, most notably About A Boy\, the Gold-certified\, much-loved score to the 2002 film starring Hugh Grant\, featuring fan favourites “Silent Sigh” and “Something To Talk About.” \nMore than two decades on from his breakthrough\, Badly Drawn Boy remains one of Britain’s most singular musical voices — a songwriter capable of moments that are tender\, funny\, melancholic and euphoric\, often all at once. \nIn this special Live & In Conversation evening\, he joins BBC 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins for an intimate show of songs and stories spanning an extraordinary career. Expect stripped-back live performances\, reflections on the making of classic records\, behind-the-scenes tales from the Mercury Prize era and beyond\, and a candid look at the highs\, lows and magic that have shaped his journey. \nChris Hawkins is one of BBC 6 Music’s most respected broadcasters\, whose interview credits include Calvin Harris\, The Killers\, Florence Welch\, Dave Grohl\, Björk\, and Jack White. \nThis is a rare opportunity to experience the man behind the music up close\, honest\, warm\, revealing and\, as ever\, wonderfully unpredictable.

SUMMARY:Rewilding in Action: A Tour of Heal Somerset with Heal Co-Founder Jan Stannard
DESCRIPTION:Come along and learn more about nature-led recovery at Heal’s first rewilding site\, Heal Somerset.\nHeal Somerset began its recovery from its ecologically depleted state at the beginning of 2023 and nature here is already beginning to bounce back. This tour is a unique opportunity to spend time with Heal’s co-founder and acting CEO\, Jan Stannard\, who will take you around part of our beautiful site on mown paths. \nYou will learn more around the wider context of rewilding\, including the reasons we need it and the benefits it brings to nature\, the climate and to our own wellbeing. Jan will talk about the rewilding principles that Heal follows and give you an insight into some of our plans for the land\, particularly the interventions we’re considering and our plans for future livestock introductions. The group will also hear about some of the changes we have seen on the site already\, including the very welcome appearance of wild-living beavers. \nYou will also hopefully experience some of the varied wildlife we have on site\, but even if the creatures are elusive on the day\, we know you will still find the site a beautiful\, peaceful and restorative place to be. \nYour tour will finish with refreshments in our 17th century farmhouse where conversations about rewilding and Heal can continue.

SUMMARY:Adam Frost
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning British garden designer and BBC Gardeners’ World presenter\, Adam Frost\, is leaving the garden and heading back out on tour! \nIn his most personal show to date\, Adam will discuss the plants that have shaped his life and reflect on what’s brought him to where he is now. He’ll unearth the inspiration he’s found through a life in the garden\, the people he’s met along the way\, the music that’s steered his course and why he identifies as an ‘old romantic fool’. \nAdam will share previously untold stories of how his passion for plants has taken him around the world and challenged him with unexpected experiences – from curating a garden in Japan during a monsoon to meeting heroes. \nCloser to home\, gardening is fundamental to Adam’s sense of family\, wellbeing and recovery. In September 2021\, he found himself grappling with the mental scars of the pandemic and facing a momentous house (or more importantly\, garden) move. He’ll talk about navigating that change and reconnecting with nature. \nAdam will also explore the creative act of putting a garden together and how he’s had to learn to embrace his artistic side. \nDon’t miss your chance to hear Adam’s amusing anecdotes and poignant reflections\, and to immerse yourself not just in gardening\, but in human nature itself and the madness of it all.

SUMMARY:Hope for Nature: Why Rewilding Matters (online)
DESCRIPTION:Already think of yourself as an avid rewilder — or not even sure what rewilding means? Either way\, you’re welcome to join this engaging introduction to rewilding with Jan Stannard\, co-founder and CEO of Heal. \nWe know that we need rewilding. England is one of the most nature-depleted countries ranking 234th in the world for its state of nature and one in six species are threatened with extinction. For us\, rewilding means giving nature what it needs to heal. Trees and wildflowers flourish\, wildlife comes back in abundance and vulnerable species begin to recover. \nIn this session Jan will talk about the key principles of rewilding\, discuss the approach taken by Heal and consider the very real impact upon nature\, climate change and our own wellbeing. She will also look at how these principles can translate into smaller spaces including gardens. \nAbout Jan Stannard \nJan Stannard is the co-founder and CEO of Heal. She moved into the charity sector after 40 years’ experience in business\, having served on company boards in the strategic communications and digital marketing sectors. She has led the charity since its launch in 2020 through a phase of rapid growth\, including the acquisition of the Heal Somerset site\, and is now starting to look at funding options for the next site.

SUMMARY:Seed Talks – The History of Folk Horror
DESCRIPTION:Explore the shadowy history of folk horror and its connection to ancient customs and rituals on the British Isles. Followed by Q&A. \nWhy do stories of ghosts\, witches and shapes in the night continue to haunt our imaginations? What is it about those ancient landscapes\, ruined churches\, mist-shrouded moors and lonely country lanes which so frequently feature in folk horror tales? In this talk\, Professor Marisa Linton uncovers the strange and compelling history of folk horror in the British Isles – from eerie legends rooted in pagan belief to tales shaped by the land itself\, its forgotten rituals\, sacred sites and unsettling past. \nTracing a line from whispered folklore through the chilling ghost stories of M. R. James and Arthur Conan Doyle\, and on to Gothic classics such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula\, we will explore how folk horror has continually reinvented fear for new generations. From The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General\, to modern stories of outsiders stumbling upon remote communities still ruled by “old ways\,” the genre has never stopped evolving. Today\, folk horror is experiencing a revival\, as writers and filmmakers breathe fresh life into ancient legends\, revealing that the uncanny is very much alive and thriving in the twenty-first century. \nDoors open at 7pm\, talk starts at 7:30pm – come down early to grab a good seat! \nFollow us on IG @seedtalks \nSpeaker Bio: \nMarisa Linton is a historian\, writer and Professor Emerita of History at Kingston University\, where she taught the history of folklore\, belief in magic\, the history of women\, and the history of European witch-hunts. She is internationally recognised as a leading authority on the French Revolution\, the European Enlightenment and the history of women in France. \nAlongside her academic career\, she has delivered numerous public talks\, appeared on TV and radio\, and served as a historical adviser for TV. Today\, she also writes fantasy novels that draw on her love for ancient Celtic Britain\, folklore and belief in magic\, ghost stories and the supernatural. \nThis talk is 16+

SUMMARY:A Kinder Way to Well: Bringing Compassion Back to Self-Care
DESCRIPTION:An interactive workshop inviting you to rethink self-care through kindness\, compassion\, and a more human understanding of wellbeing. \nSelf-care is meant to help us feel better. Yet for many of us\, it has increasingly become another area of pressure\, something we should be doing “properly\,” keeping up with\, or fixing ourselves through. \nThis interactive workshop offers a different way in. \nLed by wellbeing writer\, podcaster and coach Claire Fitzsimmons\, this session invites you to explore what wellbeing looks like when it’s rooted in kindness\, compassion\, and curiosity rather than self-improvement or constant striving. Instead of asking what needs to change\, we’ll gently explore what needs care. \nThrough guided reflection\, conversation\, and simple\, accessible exercises\, you’ll be supported to rethink your relationship with self-care itself\, widening it beyond routines\, rules\, or trends\, and reconnecting it to the very real experience of being a person in the world today. \nThis workshop is for anyone who feels overwhelmed by wellbeing advice\, disconnected from themselves\, or just unsure whether the way they’ve been taught to “look after themselves” actually works for them. \nYou’ll leave with: \n\n\nA more compassionate understanding of what self-care can be \n\n\nGreater clarity about what supports your emotional and mental wellbeing \n\n\nReflections and ideas you can return to in everyday life \n\n\nA sense of self-trust that doesn’t rely on doing more or being better \n\n\nAs part of the Frome Kindness Festival\, this workshop explores kindness as something we can practise inwardly as well as outwardly. Because extending kindness to ourselves isn’t indulgent or selfish\, it’s often the foundation that allows us to meet the world\, and each other\, with more care. \n  \nABOUT CLAIRE FITZIMMONS \nClaire Fitzsimmons is the co-founder of If Lost\, Start Here\, a Somerset-based wellbeing company on a mission to help people get to a better place. As an ICF Associate Certified Coach and a certified emotions coaching practitioner\, Claire works with women navigating change\, burnout\, emotional overwhelm or simply a sense of feeling stuck. SUMMARY:The Gift of Water: A story of kindness and unkindness in Frome\, past\, present and future
DESCRIPTION:The Gift of Water. A story of kindness and unkindness in Frome\, past\, present and future. \nJayne Sadgrove (Chair\, Frome Society) with Simon Keyes \nOur taps now give us drinking water. We take it for granted. \nBut it took over ten years for town leaders to agree that Frome needed piped drinking water in the 1870s. Learn why people denied that a clean water supply was needed. Surely it was obvious? \nDiscover how our predecessors managed to provide water for their families\, for drinking\, cooking and washing. There are visible traces around our town.\nAccess to clean water is vital for health. How can we ensure drinking water is freely available to all in our town today? \nThis special evening is a first-ever collaboration between the Kindness Festival and the Frome Society. It will consist of a presentation followed by an interval\, discussion and Q&A. Wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase. It will also be possible to participate online.

SUMMARY:Frome Kindness Festival - Rob Hopkins
DESCRIPTION:The world feels so profoundly unkind right now. But is that how it’s always going to be? \nWould a society rooted in kindness be a better way to reach the kind of future we all long to see? Transition movement founder\, time traveller and author Rob Hopkins will give the 2026 Kindness Festival lecture in which he will take us on a journey to visit the future that resulted from our placing kindness at the heart of policy\, economics and society. \nHe will share with us things he saw there\, stories he heard\, and what it felt like to be there. As bell hooks once put it\, “what we cannot imagine cannot come into being”. \nSo join him\, as he steps through the fabric of time\, taking us with him\, to immerse ourselves in a world built on kindness. You’ll be glad you went.

SUMMARY:Imagine more Kindness in Schools
DESCRIPTION:An evening for parents\, teachers\, and anyone concerned about bringing more kindness into schools and other learning environments. \nIn the first half of the evening\, Masha Kastner has generously agreed to be interviewed about her experience as the mother of a 13-year-old daughter\, Helena\, who took her own life in January 2024. Heli often asked: “Where is all this pressure coming from?” She deeply felt the weight of stress\, competition\, and unkindness in school\, and dreamed of a world where children were valued\, supported\, and free to be themselves. Masha and her partner David live in Trowbridge and in 2025 set up a new charity\, Kindwaves\, to take forward their vision of a world in which kindness comes first. \nIn the second half\, Melody Hunter-Evans will facilitate a discussion about the issues that have been raised\, and about how we can all imagine – and bring about – more kindness in schools. \nKindwaves is a new charity\, advocating for cultures of kindness in all learning environments\, to address the ongoing crisis of wellbeing for children\, young people\, families and educators. Kindwaves supports schools towards improving wellbeing\, engagement\, behaviour and staff sustainability by strengthening the relational systems that underpin learning. Using Participatory Action Research and consultancy\, Kindwaves works collaboratively\, enabling schools to identify and address cultural challenges with their community\, creating voice and agency: www.kindwaves.org.uk \nMelody Hunter-Evans is the Children and Young Person’s Officer for Frome Town Council\, who are supporting this event. \nMasha will be interviewed by Martha Oster\, an artist and educator who is deputy Chair of Governors at Vallis School and a board member of The Good Heart. \nTea\, coffee & biscuits will be provided in the break

SUMMARY:Frome Grief Network - Community Conversations around grief and loss
DESCRIPTION:A gentle\, welcoming community event creating space to talk openly about grief and loss\, hear lived experiences\, ask questions\, and connect with others through conversation\, music and food. Do you ever wish we could have more open conversations about grief\, loss and bereavement? Would you like to understand more about what happens when someone dies\, or how to support yourself\, or others\, through times of change\, uncertainty and loss? Are you curious about what helps people feel less alone in their grief? \nThis gentle\, welcoming event creates space to talk openly about grief and to challenge the stigma that often surrounds it. Through short talks\, small-group conversations\, lived stories\, creative experiences and shared food\, we explore how grief is lived and supported and supported by community\, alongside some of the challenges we can face. There will be opportunities to hear people’s personal experiences of loss and what has helped them through\, alongside practical and emotional perspectives on bereavement. \nThe event is designed to be relaxed and supportive. You can drop in at any point and you are equally welcome to stay for the whole event. Whether you are personally affected by grief\, curious to learn more\, or working locally with people around loss and bereavement\, you are warmly invited. \nAlongside the conversations\, there will be a warming lunch of soup provided by The Good Heart (£3 per cup)\, plenty of tea and cake\, singing from Companion Voices\, and spaces to reflect. We will be displaying the Somerset Speak Their Name Memorial Quilt and the beautiful tree mural created collaboratively at last year’s event.

SUMMARY:Future Council Screening and Q&A with Frome Youth Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:A film by Damon Gameau. Eight kids go on a trip across Europe to challenge powerful leaders and find solutions to our ecological challenges\nFuture Council\, (PG) directed by Damon Gameau (known for 2040 and That Sugar Film)\, follows eight children on a biofuel-powered road trip across Europe as they challenge powerful leaders and seek solutions to ecological crises. The film celebrates youth leadership and imagines a future shaped by hope\, courage\, and collective action — a perfect companion to the message of Plastic Bones. \nThis follows on from the earlier procession led by Frome Youth Climate Action group\, a dynamic group of young environmental activists aged 12 to 18\, who carried ‘Plastic Bones’ through the town – a handmade globe sculpture created from rubbish collected on local streets along with natural and recycled materials – symbolising the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our planet and the vital role of young people play in holding up its future.

SUMMARY:Alice Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Alice Roberts as she takes us on an investigative journey to establish who spread Christianity\, how and why; the story of the fall of an Empire – and the rise of another. \nCelebrating the publication of her new book\, Domination\, the narrative will lead audiences from a secluded valley in South Wales to the shores of Brittany; from the heart of the Roman Empire in a time of political turmoil to the ancient city of Corinth in the footsteps of the apostle Paul; from Alexandria in the fourth century to Constantinople. \nAs the Roman Empire crumbled in Western Europe\, a shadow of power remained\, almost perfectly mapping onto its disappearing territories. And then\, it continued to spread. Unearthing the archaeological clues and challenging long-established histories\, Professor Roberts tells a remarkable story about the relationship between the Roman Empire and Christianity. \nLifting the veil on secrets that have been hidden in plain sight\, this story is nothing short of astonishing. Domination is a page-turning exploration of power and its survival\, and now you have the opportunity to hear more from the author in this exciting evening with Professor Alice Roberts.
