SUMMARY:Rosa Vasquez Espinoza talks to Nicola Cutcher | The Secrets of the Amazon
DESCRIPTION:Rosa grew up in Peru with the rainforest as her back garden\, learning its lessons from her grandmother\, a native healer in natural medicine. Now as a biologist and conservationist\, she re-explores the Amazon with a unique blend of scientific enquiry and ancient insight. In her book The Spirit of the Rainforest\, we meet pink dolphins\, killer caterpillars\, stingless bees\, fish the size of a VW Beetle and a river whose waters flow at boiling point. \nRosa takes ayahuasca with the shamans and travels with the Ashaninka community who practise kametsu asaiki ‘living beautifully’ – ‘honouring the invisible spiritual bond we have with the natural world’. \n“The Amazon brings us back to our roots: to the simple yet profound truth that we are an extension of nature and beauty. It teaches us strength and resilience in the face of change. It shows us that generosity overpowers unfairness.”\nRosa Vasquez Espinoza \nRosa will be in conversation with Nicola Cutcher\, an investigative journalist\, documentary maker\, and campaigner against river pollution. \nThe event takes place in our venue for the weekend\, RISE. So come on along\, grab a mid-afternoon treat from onsite Rye Bakery and discover what our festival has to offer. \nPlease note: there is no parking at the venue itself\, but there is plenty of long-stay public parking within close walking distance to the venue at Cattle Market Car Park or Merchants Barton Car Park. The venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users. \nThis event is part of the Consider the Wondrous | nature\, wonder\, books & us festival.

SUMMARY:Eloise Kane talks to Horatio Clare | When Were We Wild?
DESCRIPTION:In Wilderlands\, the archaeologist Eloise Kane takes us on a fascinating and unfamiliar tour through 12\,000 years of our history. \nWhen the glaciers finally retreated at the end of the last Ice Age\, our ancestors crossed the land-bridge from the continent and reinhabited these islands. There have been humans here ever since – working the land\, taking from it what they needed (and often taking more). So\, when was Britain last truly wild? \nArchaeology has made amazing advances in recent decades\, changing our view of the past. Perhaps when we realise that humans have always been a part of this landscape\, we can see our own problems in a new light. Eloise shows how plants and animals\, like us\, manipulate their environments. \n“In this way of thinking\, it is easier to envisage humans as part of the world\, as one node in a much vaster set of relationships\, rather than the be-all and end-all of existence.”\nEloise Kane \nEloise will be in conversation with writer\, broadcaster and thinker Horatio Clare. Horatio Clare will be appearing at Consider the Wondrous earlier on in the day in conversation with psychotherapist and author Julia Samuel on the subject of Nature and Our Minds. We are pleased to say the venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users. \nThis event is part of the Consider the Wondrous | nature\, wonder\, books & us festival.

SUMMARY:Jon Gower & Stephen Moss in Conversation | Bird Talk
DESCRIPTION:An unmissable conversation between two great bird enthusiasts. \nJon Gower has loved birds since one of his collier grandfather’s canaries hatched in the palm of his hand. In Birdland\, he travels Britain from Portland Bill to the Hebrides in search of kittiwakes\, bustards and turtle doves as well as a remarkable cast of characters – poets\, soldiers\, ‘The Goose Whisperer’ – who observe\, conserve and marvel at them. \nStephen Moss is a naturalist\, broadcaster and author of many books including the acclaimed series of bird biographies which will hatch a new addition The Puffin this October. He has written an introduction to the classic books written in the 1950s by a remarkable musician and bird-woman Len Howard\, now republished in a single volume as Bird Life. He is President of the Somerset Wildlife Trust. \nBoth authors\, in Jon’s words\, ‘want to tell people about birds in the hope that it kindles the light of care.’ \nThe event takes place in our venue for the weekend\, RISE. So come on along\, grab a drink from the Rye Bakery and step into the first evening of our festival. \nPlease note: there is no parking at the venue itself\, but there is plenty of long-stay public parking within close walking distance to the venue at Cattle Market Car Park or Merchants Barton Car Park. We are pleased to say the venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users. \nThis event is part of the Consider the Wondrous | nature\, wonder\, books & us festival.

SUMMARY:David Oakes\, Iain Ballamy & Elliot Galvin | We Are Nature
DESCRIPTION:A gala evening of words and music inspired by the natural world. \nEnd the day with flowing jazz\, beauty\, poignancy and rapture. From earliest times\, human art and music has celebrated and sought to understand the mysterious world around us. We’re thrilled to have such a stellar line-up for this gala where human creativity reflects back the creativity of nature. \nIain Ballamy is an internationally feted composer and saxophonist. His latest album Riversphere blurs genre divisions and boundaries between composition and improv. Recently he’s been working with the multi-instrumentalist Elliot Galvin on a new project\, Instant Nature. \nDavid Oakes is a leading English actor of the stage and screen. But he’s also an increasingly prominent ecologist and conservationist\, having obtained a Masters in Evolutionary and Behavioural Ecology from the University of Exeter\, and is the president of The Wildlife Trusts. He is the host and producer of the natural history podcast Tree’s a Crowd. \nThis special evening will be hosted by actor\, bookseller and festival co-director Tina Gaisford-Waller.\n£3 of every ticket sale for this event will be donated to Friends of the River Frome. \nThis very special event is kindly sponsored by Brook Street Pottery\nwww.brookstreetpottery.co.uk \nThe event takes place in our beautiful venue for the weekend\, RISE.

SUMMARY:Cal Flyn talks to Charles Foster | The Savage Landscape
DESCRIPTION:In The Savage Landscape Cal Flyn goes in search of wildness “because I wanted to live my life more intensely… tap into a rawer\, more authentic\, more capable\, part of myself.” \nShe meets gorillas in Uganda\, blue sheep in Nepal\, and writes luminously in terror and fascination of the new world created in front of her eyes by a volcanic eruption in Iceland. But she travels into thought and ideas as well as landscapes\, exploring the historical and political context of what she sees. Everywhere\, she encounters the contradictions of wildness on a crowded planet – the clutter of research bases in the pure whiteness of Antarctica\, a ‘Welcome’ sign in an officially designated ‘wilderness’\, the shocking but commonplace eviction of people from their ancestral lands in the name of nature conservation. Nonetheless\, again and again there is astonishment. “Within each landscape one might hit a bedrock of pure feeling… this is freedom. This is awe. This is horrified delight.” \nSavage Landscape is Cal Flyn’s triumphant follow-up to her wildly bestselling book Islands of Abandonment\, which marked her out as one of the brightest talents in writing about place and people. She will be in conversation with Charles Foster. \nThis event is kindly sponsored by Sherlock & Pages. \nThe event takes place in our venue for the weekend\, RISE. So come along early\, enjoy coffee (or brunch) onsite at the wonderful Rye Bakery and launch into the second full day of our festival. \nThis event is part of the Consider the Wondrous | nature\, wonder\, books & us festival.

SUMMARY:Charles Foster and Mark Cocker | Seeing the World Afresh
DESCRIPTION:We’re privileged to host this conversation between two of the most generous-minded thinkers concerned with the natural world. \nMark Cocker is one of our leading naturalists. He leads courses in nature watching and writing (and will also be leading a guided nature walk earlier in the day here at Consider the Wondrous). His new book The Nature of Seeing encourages us to reclaim our inner gift for wonder and to see the living world in all its infinite detail and mystery. \nCharles Foster is a qualified vet\, barrister and Fellow of Exeter College\, Oxford. In The Edges of the World\, he shows how in both nature and our culture\, creativity\, change and freshness come from the edges of things\, not the complacent\, self-regarding centre. It’s the perfect book for a creative and ‘different’ town like Frome! \nTo give the authors time to fully explore their ideas\, this event will be 90 minutes long. \nThe event takes place in our venue for the weekend\, RISE. So come along for lunch onsite at the wonderful Rye Bakery and make the most of day two of our festival. \nThis event is part of the Consider the Wondrous | nature\, wonder\, books & us festival.

SUMMARY:Joseph Jebelli talks to Anita Roy | The Brain at Rest
DESCRIPTION:We’re constantly badgered to do more\, to aim higher\, to make the most of our time. Our phones and social media\, which pose as a break from work\, only keep our minds over-stimulated and anxious. \nIn The Brain at Rest\, Joseph Jebelli explains why stress is so damaging and introduces us to the brain’s ‘default network’ – the circuitry that helps us daydream\, reflect and imagine. He shares tips on reorganising your life to prioritise sleep\, finding silence\, walking and spending time in nature. Rest is not a lazy alternative to work\, but an essential part of it. \n“Activating the default network can enhance your intelligence\, creativity\, social empathy and long-term productivity. It can improve your health and help stave off neurological disease.” Joseph Jebelli \nJoseph will be in conversation with Anita Roy – a writer\, editor\, environmentalist and regular contributor to The Guardian Country Diary. \nThe event takes place in our venue for the weekend\, RISE. So come along early for an afternoon coffee and cake onsite at the wonderful Rye Bakery and enjoy the last few events of our fabulous festival. \nThis event is part of the Consider the Wondrous | nature\, wonder\, books & us festival.

SUMMARY:Harriet Rix talks to Julian Hight | The Genius of Trees
DESCRIPTION:Our hope is that Consider the Wondrous can help us to rethink our place on the planet\, as one remarkable species among so many others. So\, it’s fitting that our final event this year should show something as commonplace as trees in a radically different light. \nIt’s easy to think of trees as noble\, beautiful but ultimately passive presences in the landscape. Harriet Rix’s extraordinary book The Genius of Trees tells a different story. Trees have agency\, modifying and working with the animals\, plants and fungi around them: they manipulate the clouds to produce the climate they like\, they shiver rock into fertile soil\, they change the very atmosphere. \nHarriet Rix has led an extraordinary life – with an education spanning a Biochemistry degree earned at Oxford\, to an MPhil in the History and Philosophy of Science\, specialising in Ottoman Science\, from Cambridge. Her studies led to travel\, and work in IED and landmine clearance in the Middle East. The terrible effects of environmental degradation that she witnessed in Iraq prompted her to join the tree sector\, and in 2018 she returned to the UK to try to learn about the world of trees in this context. \n“This is a story of how tree-ish trees are\, and how… they have woven the world into a place of great beauty and extraordinary variety” Harriet Rix \nJulian Hight is a tree-obsessive\, punk rocker and graphic designer. His new book The Ancient Tree Explorer is a fascinating and sumptuous guide to the most magnificent trees in Britain. On Saturday 19 September at 10am\, you can join Julian as he leads us on a tree adventure around Frome. \nThis event takes place in our venue for the weekend\, RISE. So come along early for a late afternoon coffee and cake at the wonderful onsite Rye Bakery and enjoy this final event of our fabulous festival. \nThis event is part of the Consider the Wondrous | nature\, wonder\, books & us festival.

SUMMARY:Twilight Beaver Watch
DESCRIPTION:This is a rare opportunity to join a small group for a twilight beaver watch and experience the magic of seeing these remarkable animals living wild. You’ll enjoy a peaceful and immersive evening watching wildlife emerge as day turns to night. \nOur thriving beaver family has really made themselves at home on site at Heal Somerset\, establishing an impressive lodge and building a network of dams. They have been busy transforming the landscape in extraordinary ways and they are creating thriving wetlands that support a wealth of wildlife\, improve water quality and increase biodiversity. \nFull disclosure: beavers are often seen from the viewing area\, so there’s a good chance that you’ll see at least one\, but we can’t guarantee it. But even if you don’t\, you will learn lots about them as well as witness their hard work whilst spending valuable time in nature. \nEach beaver watch will be carefully led by experienced wildlife guide Nick Patel. His respectful approach will minimise disturbance as the beavers’ wellbeing is always the priority. We ask that all attendees follow this approach. \nAbout your workshop leader\, Nick Patel: \nNick is a tour guide\, conservationist\, naturalist and birder and is passionate about helping to protect\, create and maintain British wildlife. A lifelong Birdwatcher\, and former Nature reserve Warden\, Nick has devoted his life to shouting about how amazing our native biodiversity is and just why we should care for it. \nNick says “Having led tours here at Heal Somerset for two years now\, I’ve witnessed first-hand the speed at which nature has already made a comeback. I’m super passionate about showing everyone who visits the site the wealth of wildlife bouncing back\, including some really beautiful species and fabulous rewilding habitats.”

SUMMARY:Autumn Equinox Gathering with Amanda Randell Cox
DESCRIPTION:The Autumn Equinox is that beautiful moment when day and night are held in perfect balance before the landscape begins its gentle transition into winter. Rather than celebrating abundance\, it celebrates noticing\, seed heads instead of flowers\, texture instead of colour\, habitats instead of displays. \nTo celebrate this Autumn Equinox we invite you to join Amanda Randell Cox\, a local artist specialising in landscape-led botanical design\, at Heal Somerset for a morning of exploration\, creation and delicious food. We will start the day with tea\, coffee\, fruit and pastries followed by a guided walk around our beautiful rewilding site. We will then return to the community nature cabin for a creative botanical session inspired by everything we’ve just seen together during the morning walk. \nWorking together in small groups\, guests will create a relaxed autumn table meadow using seasonal grasses and seed heads gathered in advance\, before making their own delicate wire insect to take home. \nFinally\, we will enjoy a seasonal vegetarian brunch surrounded by the botanical table meadows created together\, with time to reflect on the changing season and everything discovered during the morning. \nTimings \n7.30am Meet at the Community Nature Cabin for tea\, coffee\, fruit and pastries \n7.45am Welcome and introduction to the Autumn Equinox\, followed by a guided walk through Heal’s beautiful rewilding landscape \n9.00am Return to the Community Nature Cabin for a creative botanical session \n10.15am Seasonal vegetarian brunch \n11.00am Event ends \nAbout your guide\, Amanda Randell Cox \nAmanda Randell Cox is a botanical artist\, creative project manager and RHS Chelsea Gold medallist whose work explores the relationship between people\, plants and place. \nAfter more than twenty years creating floral installations\, teaching professional floristry and working closely with historic gardens and landscapes\, her practice has evolved towards landscape-led botanical design\, inspired by the textures\, seed heads and quiet beauty of rewilding landscapes as the seasons change. \nAmanda’s work is rooted in the belief that creativity begins with noticing\, slowing down to observe the rhythms of the landscape\, understanding how habitats support wildlife\, and discovering beauty in the often-overlooked details of nature. \nShe is delighted to be sharing this special Autumn Equinox Gathering at Heal Somerset\, inviting guests to slow down\, observe and create together in celebration of the changing season\, and an invitation to keep noticing long after the morning ends.

SUMMARY:Herbalism and Medicine Making Day with Elena Tornberg-Lennox
DESCRIPTION:Come and explore nature in a new way at this Herbalism Walk and Medicine-Making Day led by Elena Tornberg-Lennox. \nYou will discover the history and medicinal uses of plants\, deepening your appreciation and understanding of them and how humans have connected to them throughout time. \nAs we move into autumn\, when the days are cooler and the nights are crisper\, the abundance of the natural world invites us to explore her gifts. So many of the plants we walk past every day have medicinal properties\, with some that might surprise you. Even bramble leaves and the humble nettle offer incredible health benefits\, while haws can support the heart and joints and rosehips contain around 40 times more vitamin C than oranges. \nThroughout the session\, Elena will share her ecological and herbal knowledge as you explore a different way of connecting with nature. Together\, you will walk the land\, identifying medicinal plants\, discussing their uses and learning how to forage for them respectfully. You’ll then enjoy a tasting of wild herbal teas before making your own hedgerow syrup\, created over the firepit\, to take home. \nTimings: \n\n10am: Arrival and welcome\n11.30am: Walk of site\n1pm: Lunch (please bring own)\n2pm: Medicine Making Session over the firepit\n4pm: Session ends\n\nRefreshments will be provided throughout the day \nAbout your guide\, Elena Tornberg-Lennox: \nElena is a herbalist\, ecologist\, storyteller and rewilder\, and loves to help people find ways to connect with the land and nature. Elena believes deeply in finding practical ways to work with the land\, and honouring the natural rhythms and processes of the natural world. \nElena says\, “By learning to work with plants\, we notice more and create a deep connection with the world around us. To be able to name and understand a plant creates a relationship that will last. What we know\, we can protect. Rewilding also needs us to rewild ourselves\, and understand ourselves as a part of nature”.

SUMMARY:Tim Wheeler (Ash) Acoustic & in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Ash frontman and principal songwriter Tim Wheeler will be joined by BBC 6 Music presenter Chris Hawkins for a special intimate evening of acoustic performances and conversation\, exploring more than three decades of songs\, stories and life inside one of Britain’s most enduring alternative rock bands. \nFrom writing Girl From Mars while still a teenager to the huge success of Ash’s landmark debut album 1977\, Wheeler has been responsible for some of the most instantly recognisable guitar anthems of his generation. Three decades later\, the band remain a formidable creative force\, most recently releasing their ninth studio album Ad Astra. \nThis special Frome appearance offers fans the chance to hear Tim revisit the stories behind the songs\, from Ash’s teenage beginnings and extraordinary rise to Glastonbury headline status\, through three decades of records and touring\, performing acoustic versions of songs from across his career along the way. \nHosting the conversation is Chris Hawkins\, one of BBC 6 Music’s most respected broadcasters\, whose interview credits include Calvin Harris\, The Killers\, Florence Welch\, Dave Grohl\, Björk and Jack White. \nThis event has a minimum age requirement of 10. SUMMARY:Between the Seams with Patrick Grant
DESCRIPTION:Join host of the Great British Sewing Bee Patrick Grant as he takes you behind the scenes of the Sewing Bee workroom\, through Saville Row and on a journey to understanding what it means to craft and be creative in today’s world. \nWith no shortage of stories from his time on telly\, Patrick shares some of the greatest triumphs as well as the last-minute disasters that are all part and parcel of making things that last. \nPatrick will explore how our relationship with clothing has gone wrong in ways we barely notice: 100 billion garments produced every year\, a third of them never worn\, and the equivalent of a bin lorry full of clothes burned or buried every single second. But his argument is not nostalgic. It’s personal\, economic\, and quietly radical—about what gets lost when price becomes the only measure of value\, and what might be recovered when it isn’t. \nWith the chance to ask Patrick your own questions\, expect an evening about craftmanship\, creativity\, and the joy of art in a world increasingly held together by Polyester and wishful thinking
