SUMMARY:Twilight Beaver Watch
DESCRIPTION:This is a rare opportunity to join a small group for a twilight beaver watch and experience the magic of seeing these remarkable animals living wild. You’ll enjoy a peaceful and immersive evening watching wildlife emerge as day turns to night. \nOur thriving beaver family has really made themselves at home on site at Heal Somerset\, establishing an impressive lodge and building a network of dams. They have been busy transforming the landscape in extraordinary ways and they are creating thriving wetlands that support a wealth of wildlife\, improve water quality and increase biodiversity. \nFull disclosure: beavers are often seen from the viewing area\, so there’s a good chance that you’ll see at least one\, but we can’t guarantee it. But even if you don’t\, you will learn lots about them as well as witness their hard work whilst spending valuable time in nature. \nEach beaver watch will be carefully led by experienced wildlife guide Nick Patel. His respectful approach will minimise disturbance as the beavers’ wellbeing is always the priority. We ask that all attendees follow this approach. \nAbout your workshop leader\, Nick Patel: \nNick is a tour guide\, conservationist\, naturalist and birder and is passionate about helping to protect\, create and maintain British wildlife. A lifelong Birdwatcher\, and former Nature reserve Warden\, Nick has devoted his life to shouting about how amazing our native biodiversity is and just why we should care for it. \nNick says “Having led tours here at Heal Somerset for two years now\, I’ve witnessed first-hand the speed at which nature has already made a comeback. I’m super passionate about showing everyone who visits the site the wealth of wildlife bouncing back\, including some really beautiful species and fabulous rewilding habitats.”

SUMMARY:Autumn Botanical Brunch
DESCRIPTION:The Autumn Equinox is that beautiful moment when day and night are held in perfect balance before the landscape begins its gentle transition into winter. Rather than celebrating abundance\, it celebrates noticing\, seed heads instead of flowers\, texture instead of colour\, habitats instead of displays. \nTo celebrate this Autumn Equinox we invite you to join Amanda Randell Cox\, a local artist specialising in landscape-led botanical design\, at Heal Somerset for a morning of exploration\, creation and delicious food. We will start the day with tea\, coffee\, fruit and pastries followed by a guided walk around our beautiful rewilding site. We will then return to the community nature cabin for a creative botanical session inspired by everything we’ve just seen together during the morning walk. \nWorking together in small groups\, guests will create a relaxed autumn table meadow using seasonal grasses and seed heads gathered in advance\, before making their own delicate wire insect to take home. \nFinally\, we will enjoy a seasonal vegetarian brunch surrounded by the botanical table meadows created together\, with time to reflect on the changing season and everything discovered during the morning. \nTimings \n7.30am Meet at the Community Nature Cabin for tea\, coffee\, fruit and pastries \n7.45am Welcome and introduction to the Autumn Equinox\, followed by a guided walk through Heal’s beautiful rewilding landscape \n9.00am Return to the Community Nature Cabin for a creative botanical session \n10.15am Seasonal vegetarian brunch \n11.00am Event ends \nAbout your guide\, Amanda Randell Cox \nAmanda Randell Cox is a botanical artist\, creative project manager and RHS Chelsea Gold medallist whose work explores the relationship between people\, plants and place. \nAfter more than twenty years creating floral installations\, teaching professional floristry and working closely with historic gardens and landscapes\, her practice has evolved towards landscape-led botanical design\, inspired by the textures\, seed heads and quiet beauty of rewilding landscapes as the seasons change. \nAmanda’s work is rooted in the belief that creativity begins with noticing\, slowing down to observe the rhythms of the landscape\, understanding how habitats support wildlife\, and discovering beauty in the often-overlooked details of nature. \nShe is delighted to be sharing this special Autumn Equinox Gathering at Heal Somerset\, inviting guests to slow down\, observe and create together in celebration of the changing season\, and an invitation to keep noticing long after the morning ends.

SUMMARY:Wild Guardians at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:A relaxed\, monthly volunteer gathering to support nature restoration. Rooted in a spirit of community and curiosity. Join us to learn new skills\, spend time in nature\, and connect with like-minded folk. \nCome and spend a few hours in nature doing something that matters. No experience is necessary\, just a willingness to get stuck in and try something new. \n42 Acres has been a rewilding nature reserve for over a decade and is species-rich. Join us to connect with the natural world through hands-on activities from wildlife surveying\, to tending habitats\, and slowing down with nature photography. \nSessions run on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm (except in May when we are meeting at 8pm for bats and beavers!). There will be time to connect\, wander\, and simply be outside. If you’re up for it\, you’re welcome to join in for a wild swim too. At 1pm we’ll stop and share a simple lunch together\, provided by 42 Acres. \n____ \nSun 31 May: Bats and Beavers: \nPart of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count\, with guest expert Keith Ball (Somerset Bat Group). Please note: this is an evening session\, running 8–10pm\, as we head out for some gentle nocturnal exploration. \nSun 28 June: Hazel Dormice & Reading Nature: \nJoin us to create footprint tunnels for hazel dormice to discover whether this protected species (that have been spotted on neighbouring land!) exist at 42. We’ll also take a relaxed walk around the 11-acre lake\, recording observations and contributing to global biodiversity databases. We’ll look for signs of beaver activity\, tracks\, and birdlife\, and finish at the white stork enclosure\, part of our species reintroduction work. Guided by Lynne Sewell (Sustainable Witham)\, Robyn Caple (@nestandnettleecology)\, and Lisa Hawes (42 Acres). \nSun 26 July: Butterflies\, Dragonflies + Pond Dipping: \nPart of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme\, one of the longest-running insect surveys in the world. With guest expert Fred Giles\, we’ll explore the world of butterflies\, dragonflies\, and other insects\, with a chance to get closer through pond dipping and observation. \nSun 30 Aug: Reptiles and Botanics: \nJoin us to check reptile refuges across the site\, helping us understand which species are present (and which are likely absent). Or take a creative route\, help us start making a handmade herbarium for the site while learning how to “key out”\, a step by step process used to identify unknown plant species. \nSun 27 Sep: Trees\nDiscover the stories of Britain’s ancient and veteran trees\, and learn how to identify and photograph them in their late-summer form. \nSun 25 Oct: Harvest Mice and Native Fungi:\nHelp us ascertain whether harvest mice are present on the land at 42\, we’ll search together for their tiny nests. We’ll also explore the world of fungi\, discovering what’s emerging across the site at this time of year. \nPlease Note: \n– Gloves and wellies/boots are necessary.\n– If you have issues with mobility please let us know before signing up\, we will do our best to accommodate.\n– Please book only if you’re committed to attending and staying for the entire session.\n– If you become unable to attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else.\n– If rain stops play\, we have a Plan B and will aim to move inside to create bee bricks and/or a herbarium together.\n– Please speak with your licensed medical health professional if you have any health conditions or are pregnant.\n– As much as we love our four-legged friends\, we can not allow dogs on this experience. \nLocation & Arrival: \nPlease arrive 10 minutes before we begin. SUMMARY:Herbalism and Medicine Making Day with Elena Tornberg-Lennox
DESCRIPTION:Come and explore nature in a new way at this Herbalism Walk and Medicine-Making Day led by Elena Tornberg-Lennox. \nYou will discover the history and medicinal uses of plants\, deepening your appreciation and understanding of them and how humans have connected to them throughout time. \nAs we move into autumn\, when the days are cooler and the nights are crisper\, the abundance of the natural world invites us to explore her gifts. So many of the plants we walk past every day have medicinal properties\, with some that might surprise you. Even bramble leaves and the humble nettle offer incredible health benefits\, while haws can support the heart and joints and rosehips contain around 40 times more vitamin C than oranges. \nThroughout the session\, Elena will share her ecological and herbal knowledge as you explore a different way of connecting with nature. Together\, you will walk the land\, identifying medicinal plants\, discussing their uses and learning how to forage for them respectfully. You’ll then enjoy a tasting of wild herbal teas before making your own hedgerow syrup\, created over the firepit\, to take home. \nTimings: \n\n10am: Arrival and welcome\n11.30am: Walk of site\n1pm: Lunch (please bring own)\n2pm: Medicine Making Session over the firepit\n4pm: Session ends\n\nRefreshments will be provided throughout the day \nAbout your guide\, Elena Tornberg-Lennox: \nElena is a herbalist\, ecologist\, storyteller and rewilder\, and loves to help people find ways to connect with the land and nature. Elena believes deeply in finding practical ways to work with the land\, and honouring the natural rhythms and processes of the natural world. \nElena says\, “By learning to work with plants\, we notice more and create a deep connection with the world around us. To be able to name and understand a plant creates a relationship that will last. What we know\, we can protect. Rewilding also needs us to rewild ourselves\, and understand ourselves as a part of nature”.

SUMMARY:Hope In Action: The State of Nature at Heal Somerset
DESCRIPTION:Join Heal’s co-founder and CEO\, Jan Stannard\, for a presentation and walk which brings to life the findings from the Heal Somerset State of Nature Report 2026. \nThis is the first ever State of Nature report which focuses solely on rewilding and its aim is to produce tangible evidence that rewilding can drive rapid and meaningful ecological recovery and contribute our results to a national dataset for rewilding. \nThe land at Heal Somerset is recovering using nature-led approaches\, with our role being to help restore natural processes through interventions. These interventions include the introduction of animals acting as ecosystem engineers (pigs and\, in future\, cattle and ponies)\, the renaturalisation of water flows\, and natural and assisted regeneration of trees and scrub (such as blackthorn\, hawthorn\, bramble and wild rose). \nDuring the session\, Jan will share the thinking behind Heal’s approach\, talk about the interventions taking place across the site and discuss the first suite of species and habitat surveys that form the foundation of the report. \nFollowing the presentation\, you’ll join Jan on a guided walk through Heal Somerset to see these nature-led approaches in action and discover how rewilding can help tackle the UK’s biodiversity crisis\, strengthen climate resilience and create healthier\, more resilient ecosystems.

SUMMARY:Award Winning Films from the 2026 Frome International Climate Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:THE FILM ROOM – COMMUNITY CINEMA\, supporting new and current filmmakers locally and from around the world\, because everyone should have a voice. Non mainstream cinema which matters. \n23rd September Films\nFILM 1 – OBRONI WAWU – DEAD MAN’S CLOTHES: Obroni Wawu\, meaning “dead white man’s clothes”\, follows Ghanaian creatives and traders as they confront the environmental and social toll of second hand clothing dumped from the Global North.\nFILM 2 – SAURY SEAWEED: The Korean Peninsula is a land where the Cold War never died. As oceans warm\, the southern survival limit of a mythic marine plant is relentlessly retreating north. The species is vanishing from the South. \n21st October Films\nFILM 1 – A FOOD STORY: There is a place in Tenerife where humans and animals sustain themselves with a simple yet extraordinary resource: food waste. They collect\, segregate\, cook\, store\, and create compost from it\, by sustaining up to 40 people and 400 animals each day using just the waste from a single supermarket\nFILM 2 – INTO THE WILD: INTO THE WILD explores the American West and its unique ecosystems\, where iconic species such as mustangs and coyotes are under threat. Alongside zoologist Yvan Kereun\, the film blends science\, Indigenous knowledge\, and conservation practices \n18th November Films\nFILM 1 – WHEN SOLAR LIGHTS UPON THE COMMUNITY: In a timeworn community in Shanghai\, a group of Green Housewives has turned the neighbourhood into a stage for renewable energy. When solar lights upon the community\, the players step forward: a mother of three who studied renewable power in Scandinavia; an artist who creates gallery-worthy sculptures with the community from recyclables; China’s first household-solar pioneer; a high-schooler who runs the community garden’s irrigation on renewable energy.\nFILM 2 – WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WILDLIFE IN THE CITY: The city is like a living organism. Healthy and in perfect balance\, it can make its inhabitants happy\, people as well as animals and plants. If it gets out of balance\, it becomes ill and with it all the creatures that live in it. It is a valuable habitat for animals such as hedgehogs\, rhinoceros beetles and swallowtails. But cities are under pressure. \n16th December Films\nFILM 1 – ROOTED IN RESILIENCE: In an economy often built on extraction\, the women in Rooted in Resilience offer a powerful alternative built on reciprocity. This documentary captures the journey of Indigenous entrepreneurs who treat the land as a relative rather than a resource.\nFILM 2 – WASTED 2025: Wasted prompts us to re-examine who we are and our values — to re-think our relationship with the world around us. We cannot continue to extract and exploit our ecosystems at unprecedented rates and continue down the path of wasting our precious natural resources. We want to inspire action across business\, policy and individuals to clean up our communities\, cities and natural habitats and create healthy\, thriving economies.

SUMMARY:No Dig with Charles Dowding at The Village Frome
DESCRIPTION:Charles Dowding is coming to The Village Frome for a special two-hour workshop on no dig growing. \nFor more than 40 years\, Charles has been exploring how we can grow healthy\, abundant food while disturbing the soil as little as possible. His no dig approach is rooted in a simple idea: feed the soil from the surface with compost and organic matter\, then allow its extraordinary web of life to do the work beneath. \nDuring this workshop\, Charles will share the foundations of no dig growing\, including how to create and maintain productive beds\, work with compost\, manage weeds and grow more food with less time and effort. \nWhether you have an allotment\, a vegetable patch\, a community garden or simply the beginnings of an idea\, this workshop will offer practical knowledge and encouragement for growers at every stage. \nAt The Village\, we are creating a place where people can gather\, learn and rebuild a relationship with the land and with one another. We are delighted to welcome Charles to share his experience as our own community growing spaces continue to take root. \nWith support from The National Lottery Community Fund\, we are able to offer tickets on a sliding scale of £3\, £6 or £9. Please pay what you can. Every ticket helps us continue growing The Village and creating more opportunities for people to learn\, gather and connect with the land. \nPlaces are limited and advance booking is essential. If you book and later find that you cannot attend\, please cancel your ticket so we can offer the place to someone else. \nThe Village is an outdoor\, land-based site\, so please come dressed for the October weather and wear suitable footwear. Full arrival information will be sent before the workshop

SUMMARY:Wet\, Wet\, Wet: Beaver and Human Wetlands of Heal Somerset
DESCRIPTION:Discover how humans and beavers are joining forces to restore vibrant wetland ecosystems at Heal Somerset. On this guided walk and talk with rewilding ranger Daniel Hill\, you will experience first-hand these developing wetlands and learn how dams\, ponds\, scrapes and more can shape water movement\, biodiversity\, and habitat recovery. Together you will explore how beaver activity and human intervention can complement each other to create healthier habitats\, cleaner water\, and climate-resilient ecosystems. \nAbout Daniel Hill \nAs the Rewilding Ranger at Heal Somerset\, Dan manages the site’s monitoring and land management programs. You can find him surveying for signs of beavers\, co-ordinating volunteer work parties\, or working with partners to deliver the hydrological restoration plan\, amongst a huge variety of other tasks. Dan’s passion for nature was sparked as a child growing up on an organic small holding in rural south Wales watching red kites soar above. His love of rewilding developed through volunteering with the RSPB on the Somerset Levels after completing a degree in Mathematical Sciences.

SUMMARY:Medicinal Mushrooms Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to safely identify & sustainably grow\, harvest & preserve medicinal mushrooms & extract their medicine. Create your own wild mushroom ‘medicine cabinet’ and inoculate your own log to take home & fruit in your garden for years to come. \nDuring this full-day workshop\, you’ll discover native\, wild\, medicinal mushrooms growing at 42 Acres and in the local southwest area. \nFor the first half of the day\, you’ll be heading out on a guided foraging walk; illuminating the incredible world of medicinal fungi that we commonly walk past. You’ll learn the key features needed to safely identify each mushroom and where each is commonly found. \nIn the afternoon you will be creating your own wild mushroom ‘medicine cabinet.’ You will learn how to safely preserve your mushrooms and extract their medicine for use all year round\, in yours and your loved ones lives – for a host of illness and preventative uses. This medicine is often very expensive and our shared vision is to support you to be able to do it yourself safely. Our intention is for you to feel empowered to harvest your own mushroom medicine cabinet and grow your own medicinal mushrooms. \nYou will also learn the ancient technique of mushroom inoculation – a highly sustainable method that mimics nature and produces mushrooms dense in nutrients that are hard to find from other food sources. Take home your own inoculated log – where it will fruit in your garden for years to come. \nWhat to expect: \nLearn about the properties of Turkey Tail\, Shiitake\, Lions Mane and Artist Conk\, most of which are native strains to the UK and cultivated from the wild here at 42 Acres.\nBe guided through the basics of drying and making tinctures.\nLearn the technique of mushroom inoculation – the world’s oldest recorded farming method.\nLearn more about 42 Acres’ wild-tending principles and our pioneering agriwilding projects. \nWhat is included: \nThis workshop includes a tasty lunch from our “Soil to Gut” menu – you will eat food grown on the land you’re walking. Wild teas will be provided throughout the session. \nOur session will open with a guided meditation and a check-in\, in the spirit of our vision to help ourselves attune to living in harmony with nature. We believe that connecting in this way encourages deeper connection and mindful working practices\, for both us and the land. \nThis is a unique and hands-on day ideal for any fungi lover or wild medicine cabinet enthusiast!
