SUMMARY:Wild Guardians at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:A relaxed\, monthly volunteer gathering to support nature restoration. Rooted in a spirit of community and curiosity. Join us to learn new skills\, spend time in nature\, and connect with like-minded folk. \nCome and spend a few hours in nature doing something that matters. No experience is necessary\, just a willingness to get stuck in and try something new. \n42 Acres has been a rewilding nature reserve for over a decade and is species-rich. Join us to connect with the natural world through hands-on activities from wildlife surveying\, to tending habitats\, and slowing down with nature photography. \nSessions run on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm (except in May when we are meeting at 8pm for bats and beavers!). There will be time to connect\, wander\, and simply be outside. If you’re up for it\, you’re welcome to join in for a wild swim too. At 1pm we’ll stop and share a simple lunch together\, provided by 42 Acres. \n____ \nSun 31 May: Bats and Beavers: \nPart of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count\, with guest expert Keith Ball (Somerset Bat Group). Please note: this is an evening session\, running 8–10pm\, as we head out for some gentle nocturnal exploration. \nSun 28 June: Hazel Dormice & Reading Nature: \nJoin us to create footprint tunnels for hazel dormice to discover whether this protected species (that have been spotted on neighbouring land!) exist at 42. We’ll also take a relaxed walk around the 11-acre lake\, recording observations and contributing to global biodiversity databases. We’ll look for signs of beaver activity\, tracks\, and birdlife\, and finish at the white stork enclosure\, part of our species reintroduction work. Guided by Lynne Sewell (Sustainable Witham)\, Robyn Caple (@nestandnettleecology)\, and Lisa Hawes (42 Acres). \nSun 26 July: Butterflies\, Dragonflies + Pond Dipping: \nPart of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme\, one of the longest-running insect surveys in the world. With guest expert Fred Giles\, we’ll explore the world of butterflies\, dragonflies\, and other insects\, with a chance to get closer through pond dipping and observation. \nSun 30 Aug: Reptiles and Botanics: \nJoin us to check reptile refuges across the site\, helping us understand which species are present (and which are likely absent). Or take a creative route\, help us start making a handmade herbarium for the site while learning how to “key out”\, a step by step process used to identify unknown plant species. \nSun 27 Sep: Trees\nDiscover the stories of Britain’s ancient and veteran trees\, and learn how to identify and photograph them in their late-summer form. \nSun 25 Oct: Harvest Mice and Native Fungi:\nHelp us ascertain whether harvest mice are present on the land at 42\, we’ll search together for their tiny nests. We’ll also explore the world of fungi\, discovering what’s emerging across the site at this time of year. \nPlease Note: \n– Gloves and wellies/boots are necessary.\n– If you have issues with mobility please let us know before signing up\, we will do our best to accommodate.\n– Please book only if you’re committed to attending and staying for the entire session.\n– If you become unable to attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else.\n– If rain stops play\, we have a Plan B and will aim to move inside to create bee bricks and/or a herbarium together.\n– Please speak with your licensed medical health professional if you have any health conditions or are pregnant.\n– As much as we love our four-legged friends\, we can not allow dogs on this experience. \nLocation & Arrival: \nPlease arrive 10 minutes before we begin. Meeting at The Hermitage car park. Full directions are on our website: www.42acres.com/getting-here \nTerms & Conditions: \nhttps://www.42acres.com/terms-and-conditions-workshops-and-experienc

SUMMARY:Fungi Field Trip: An Autumn Walk Exploring Fungi\, Mycelium & Woodland Ecology
DESCRIPTION:It’s peak fungi season\, so we’re heading out on a Fungi Field Trip to see what the woods are fruiting. \nWe’ll begin with a warming medicinal mushroom tea\, introductions\, and a chance to meet the group before heading out into the woodland. \nAs we wander\, we’ll learn how to read the clues fungi give us: shape\, colour\, texture\, scent\, habitat\, and the trees and plants growing nearby. The walk is suitable for complete beginners\, but there’ll be plenty for anyone looking to sharpen their ID skills and deepen their understanding. \nWe’ll also zoom out from individual mushrooms to the bigger fungal picture\, exploring the mycelial networks beneath our feet\, the relationships fungi form with plants and trees\, and their essential role in decomposition\, regeneration\, and woodland ecology. Along the way\, we’ll touch on some traditional culinary and medicinal uses too. \nThis is primarily a no-pick walk\, with the focus on observation\, identification\, and curiosity rather than filling baskets. We’ll also explore responsible foraging and what it might mean to have a more respectful\, reciprocal relationship with the fungal world. \nExpect mushrooms\, mycelium\, ecology\, good conversation\, and an afternoon of looking at the forest a little differently. \nNo previous knowledge needed. Just curiosity and suitable footwear. \nPlease note: this is an observational walk\, not a foraging event. We won’t be collecting or consuming psychedelic mushrooms. \nUnder 18s are very welcome when accompanied by an adult\, but everyone attending will need their own ticket. \nThe event will take place in woodland near Frome. Exact meeting details and what to bring will be shared in the week before the event. You’ll need your own transport\, so if you need a lift\, bring a mate with a car and make a night of it.

SUMMARY:No Dig with Charles Dowding at The Village Frome
DESCRIPTION:Charles Dowding is coming to The Village Frome for a special two-hour workshop on no dig growing. \nFor more than 40 years\, Charles has been exploring how we can grow healthy\, abundant food while disturbing the soil as little as possible. His no dig approach is rooted in a simple idea: feed the soil from the surface with compost and organic matter\, then allow its extraordinary web of life to do the work beneath. \nDuring this workshop\, Charles will share the foundations of no dig growing\, including how to create and maintain productive beds\, work with compost\, manage weeds and grow more food with less time and effort. \nWhether you have an allotment\, a vegetable patch\, a community garden or simply the beginnings of an idea\, this workshop will offer practical knowledge and encouragement for growers at every stage. \nAt The Village\, we are creating a place where people can gather\, learn and rebuild a relationship with the land and with one another. We are delighted to welcome Charles to share his experience as our own community growing spaces continue to take root. \nWith support from The National Lottery Community Fund\, we are able to offer tickets on a sliding scale of £3\, £6 or £9. Please pay what you can. Every ticket helps us continue growing The Village and creating more opportunities for people to learn\, gather and connect with the land. \nPlaces are limited and advance booking is essential. If you book and later find that you cannot attend\, please cancel your ticket so we can offer the place to someone else. \nThe Village is an outdoor\, land-based site\, so please come dressed for the October weather and wear suitable footwear. Full arrival information will be sent before the workshop

SUMMARY:The Village Boys: Half-Term Day
DESCRIPTION:The Village Boys has got off to such a brilliant start\, and we have heard from lots of parents whose boys attend school and would love the chance to join too. \nSo this half term we are opening the group for a special one-off day. \nThere will be games\, outdoor adventures\, practical activities\, time around the fire and plenty of space to follow the interests and energy of the group. The exact shape of the day will unfold with the boys\, the weather and whatever captures their imagination. \nThe Village Boys is about giving boys a place to belong\, be themselves\, take healthy risks\, learn alongside good men and enjoy being part of a group. It holds space for friendship\, confidence\, creativity and the beginnings of those important conversations about growing up. \nThis half-term session is also a chance for us to explore whether there is interest in a regular after-school\, weekend or school-holiday group for boys who cannot attend on Thursdays. \nPlaces are limited and booking is essential.

SUMMARY:Fungi After Dark: Biofluorescent Fungi & a Spooky UV Woodland Walk on the Eve of Halloween
DESCRIPTION:On the night before Halloween\, join us in a woodland near Frome for an after-dark wander into the stranger side of the forest. \nWe’ll start with introductions\, a warming medicinal mushroom tea\, and some time to get to know the group before heading out with UV torches in search of biofluorescent fungi and other hidden woodland wonders. \nOnce the ultraviolet lights come on\, the familiar starts to shift. Fungi\, lichens and other natural materials reveal colours and patterns our eyes would normally miss\, turning the woodland into a vivid\, otherworldly landscape hiding just beyond ordinary perception. \nWe’ll move slowly\, following whatever glows\, fluoresces or catches our curiosity\, while learning about the fungi and ecology around us. The evening ends with an explanation of how biofluorescence actually works\, and why changing the way we look can reveal an entirely different version of the world around us. \nNo specialist knowledge needed\, just curiosity\, warm clothes and a willingness to spend an autumn evening poking around in the dark. On this guided walk and talk with rewilding ranger Daniel Hill\, you will experience first-hand these developing wetlands and learn how dams\, ponds\, scrapes and more can shape water movement\, biodiversity\, and habitat recovery. Together you will explore how beaver activity and human intervention can complement each other to create healthier habitats\, cleaner water\, and climate-resilient ecosystems. \nAbout Daniel Hill \nAs the Rewilding Ranger at Heal Somerset\, Dan manages the site’s monitoring and land management programs. You can find him surveying for signs of beavers\, co-ordinating volunteer work parties\, or working with partners to deliver the hydrological restoration plan\, amongst a huge variety of other tasks. Dan’s passion for nature was sparked as a child growing up on an organic small holding in rural south Wales watching red kites soar above. His love of rewilding developed through volunteering with the RSPB on the Somerset Levels after completing a degree in Mathematical Sciences.

SUMMARY:Medicinal Mushrooms Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to safely identify & sustainably grow\, harvest & preserve medicinal mushrooms & extract their medicine. Create your own wild mushroom ‘medicine cabinet’ and inoculate your own log to take home & fruit in your garden for years to come. \nDuring this full-day workshop\, you’ll discover native\, wild\, medicinal mushrooms growing at 42 Acres and in the local southwest area. \nFor the first half of the day\, you’ll be heading out on a guided foraging walk; illuminating the incredible world of medicinal fungi that we commonly walk past. You’ll learn the key features needed to safely identify each mushroom and where each is commonly found. \nIn the afternoon you will be creating your own wild mushroom ‘medicine cabinet.’ You will learn how to safely preserve your mushrooms and extract their medicine for use all year round\, in yours and your loved ones lives – for a host of illness and preventative uses. This medicine is often very expensive and our shared vision is to support you to be able to do it yourself safely. Our intention is for you to feel empowered to harvest your own mushroom medicine cabinet and grow your own medicinal mushrooms. \nYou will also learn the ancient technique of mushroom inoculation – a highly sustainable method that mimics nature and produces mushrooms dense in nutrients that are hard to find from other food sources. Take home your own inoculated log – where it will fruit in your garden for years to come. \nWhat to expect: \nLearn about the properties of Turkey Tail\, Shiitake\, Lions Mane and Artist Conk\, most of which are native strains to the UK and cultivated from the wild here at 42 Acres.\nBe guided through the basics of drying and making tinctures.\nLearn the technique of mushroom inoculation – the world’s oldest recorded farming method.\nLearn more about 42 Acres’ wild-tending principles and our pioneering agriwilding projects. \nWhat is included: \nThis workshop includes a tasty lunch from our “Soil to Gut” menu – you will eat food grown on the land you’re walking. Wild teas will be provided throughout the session. \nOur session will open with a guided meditation and a check-in\, in the spirit of our vision to help ourselves attune to living in harmony with nature. We believe that connecting in this way encourages deeper connection and mindful working practices\, for both us and the land. \nThis is a unique and hands-on day ideal for any fungi lover or wild medicine cabinet enthusiast!

SUMMARY:Award Winning Films from the 2026 Frome International Climate Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:THE FILM ROOM – COMMUNITY CINEMA\, supporting new and current filmmakers locally and from around the world\, because everyone should have a voice. Non mainstream cinema which matters. \n18th November Films\nFILM 1 – WHEN SOLAR LIGHTS UPON THE COMMUNITY: In a timeworn community in Shanghai\, a group of Green Housewives has turned the neighbourhood into a stage for renewable energy. When solar lights upon the community\, the players step forward: a mother of three who studied renewable power in Scandinavia; an artist who creates gallery-worthy sculptures with the community from recyclables; China’s first household-solar pioneer; a high-schooler who runs the community garden’s irrigation on renewable energy.\nFILM 2 – WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WILDLIFE IN THE CITY: The city is like a living organism. Healthy and in perfect balance\, it can make its inhabitants happy\, people as well as animals and plants. If it gets out of balance\, it becomes ill and with it all the creatures that live in it. It is a valuable habitat for animals such as hedgehogs\, rhinoceros beetles and swallowtails. But cities are under pressure.

SUMMARY:Beaver moon dusk walk with Nick Patel
DESCRIPTION:Join us at dusk as the November Beaver Moon rises over Heal Somerset’s wetlands. As daylight fades and the natural world shifts from the bustle of day to the quiet rhythms of night\, join us for a peaceful and immersive dusk walk through the rewilding landscapes of Heal Somerset. \nGuided by wildlife expert Nick Patel\, this gentle evening stroll invites you to tune into the changing sounds of nature — from the last songs of daytime birds to the emerging calls of owls and the fluttering presence of bats overhead. You’ll learn to identify bird calls and evening wildlife behaviours\, while also keeping an eye out for more hidden wonders like spiders spinning their webs and the emergence of late-season fungi among the undergrowth. \nThis is also a magical time to witness more elusive creatures such as foxes and of course beavers who are particularly busy in November getting their lodge and dams ready for the Winter. \nAs the walk draws to a close\, if weather allows we’ll gather around the fire pit to enjoy hot chocolate\, sharing reflections on the evening and the stories of rewilding that continue to unfold across the site. \nThis will be a gentle\, grounding way to end your day. \nAbout your guide\, Nick Patel: \nNick is a tour guide\, conservationist\, naturalist and birder and is passionate about helping to protect\, create and maintain British wildlife. A lifelong Birdwatcher\, and former Nature reserve Warden\, Nick has devoted his life to shouting about how amazing our native biodiversity is and just why we should care for it. \nNick says “Having led tours here at Heal Somerset for two years now\, I’ve witnessed first-hand the speed at which nature has already made a comeback. I’m super passionate about showing everyone who visits the site the wealth of wildlife bouncing back\, including some really beautiful species and fabulous rewilding habitats.”
