SUMMARY:Evening Wildlife Walk & Supper with Ecologist Rob Frith
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unhurried evening at Vallis Farm\, exploring what happens on the land after daylight fades. \nWe’ll begin at 8pm with supper together in the kitchen garden\, sharing a simple\, seasonal meal and a glass of wine. As the light starts to change\, ecologist Rob Frith will introduce the wildlife we’re likely to encounter and what makes this time of day so important for many species. \nAt sunset\, we’ll head out on a guided walk around the farm\, focusing on the creatures that emerge after dark. With Rob’s expertise\, we’ll look and listen for bats\, moths\, amphibians such as newts\, and other nocturnal life that often goes unnoticed. The walk will also explore how farming practices and landscape features support wildlife through the night. If conditions are right\, we may be lucky enough to spot barn owls hunting over the fields. \nThe evening will finish around 11pm\, offering a chance to slow down\, tune in\, and see the farm from a very different perspective. \nA relaxed and informative event for anyone interested in ecology\, wildlife\, and the rhythms of the land — no specialist knowledge required\, just curiosity.

SUMMARY:Butterfly Identification Workshop at Heal Somerset
DESCRIPTION:This engaging butterfly identification workshop with Nick Patel offers an immersive way to connect with the vibrant world of butterflies\, set in the beautiful rewilding setting of Heal Somerset. \nNick will introduce attendees to the rich diversity of butterfly species that we can expect to see at this time of the year\, many of which we hope to see increase in numbers on site thanks to ongoing rewilding efforts which helps provide the perfect habitat for them. \nThis workshop will be a great opportunity for beginners\, or those looking refresh their knowledge\, to learn how to identify butterflies and to also hear more about improving habitats and the role butterflies play in the ecosystem. Nick will also discuss how we can make our own green spaces more butterfly friendly. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you’ll not only have a greater appreciation for butterflies but a renewed understanding of how essential they are in ongoing nature restoration. The two-hour session will be followed by an hour walk around the site where you will be able to put everything you have learned into practice. \nAbout your workshop leader\, Nick Patel: \nNick is a tour guide\, conservationist\, naturalist and birder and is passionate about helping to protect\, create and maintain British wildlife. A lifelong Birdwatcher\, and former Nature reserve Warden\, Nick has devoted his life to shouting about how amazing our native biodiversity is and just why we should care for it. \nNick says “Having led tours here at Heal Somerset for two years now\, I’ve witnessed first-hand the speed at which nature has already made a comeback. I’m super passionate about showing everyone who visits the site the wealth of wildlife bouncing back\, including some really beautiful species and fabulous rewilding habitats.” \nLOCATION\nHeal Somerset is in a very rural location\, a few miles from Bruton\, Frome\, the A303 and the Wiltshire border\, at Lower West Barn Farm\, Bindon Lane\, Witham Friary\, BA11 5HH. Directions will be sent in a confirmation email. \nTIMINGS\n10am Workshop begins at Heal Somerset farmhouse\n12pm Walk around site to put learning into practice\n1pm Refreshments at farmhouse \nCLOTHING AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS\nWe recommend you bring binoculars if you have them for the walking part of the workshop. \nWe recommend that you wear sturdy boots as thanks to our wild-living beavers\, it may be wet underfoot. Bring sunscreen\, antihistamines if you need them and ticks will be about so we suggest long trousers. \nACCESSIBILITY\nThe site is not yet wheelchair-accessible\, but we do have one all-terrain mobility scooter available. If you would like to use this\, please let us know ahead of the event. \nIf you use an assistance dog\, your dog will be welcome. \nIf you have any additional questions about accessibility please email events@healrewilding.org.uk. \nOTHER THINGS\nCancellation \nWe reserve the right to cancel this workshop and either refund you or book you into an alternative date. This would be due to a very poor weather forecast or illness and will be avoided unless absolutely necessary. \nPlease note\, tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled. \nChildren and babies\nChildren over 14 are welcome at this workshop as are babies in slings (the site is not pushchair-friendly in a lot of areas). Please contact events@healrewilding.org.uk for more information about bringing children. \nDogs\nWe welcome assistance dogs but you can’t bring a pet dog or any other pets to the site. \nSupporting Heal\nPlease note\, up to 50% of your ticket price will go towards supporting the work of Heal. \nYou’ll also have the chance to become a Friend of Heal and to donate to support our work. \nSpecial ticketing\nIf you are unwaged\, a student or living on a very low income and the cost of attending is prohibitive\, please email events@healrewilding.org.uk as we may be able to support your attendance. Please note this may not always be possible. \nLocal accommodation\nCamping is available at Heal Somerset and you can book that here. There are lots of places to stay in and around Frome and Bruton\, you can find information for some of them here \nTransport\nThe remote rural location means that travelling here by car is the most practical option and there will be car parking available for all tour participants.

SUMMARY:Wild Circle
DESCRIPTION:Wild Circle is a women’s group in nature -women sharing honest conversation around a fire\, in a beautiful garden setting.\nNo pressure or expectation\, just a warm welcome and a gentle invitation to take a pause from everyday life and create a little breathing space. \n“Tara made me feel very welcome and relaxed\, I felt completely at ease. I would highly recommend.” -Jo- \n“It was just what I wanted\, a real ‘firebreak’ in a busy life. Thank you for allowing us to develop what we did in our own way\, whilst gently guiding and holding the session. I think the choice to stay in the ’embrace’ of the wooden structure worked well\, and I found the time by the fire warming in body and spirit. And great cake too.” -Beverly- \nFridays 10am – 11:30am\, monthly at Vallis Farm

SUMMARY:Rewilding in Action: A Tour of Heal Somerset with Heal Co-Founder Jan Stannard
DESCRIPTION:Come along and learn more about nature-led recovery at Heal’s first rewilding site\, Heal Somerset.\nHeal Somerset began its recovery from its ecologically depleted state at the beginning of 2023 and nature here is already beginning to bounce back. This tour is a unique opportunity to spend time with Heal’s co-founder and acting CEO\, Jan Stannard\, who will take you around part of our beautiful site on mown paths. \nYou will learn more around the wider context of rewilding\, including the reasons we need it and the benefits it brings to nature\, the climate and to our own wellbeing. Jan will talk about the rewilding principles that Heal follows and give you an insight into some of our plans for the land\, particularly the interventions we’re considering and our plans for future livestock introductions. The group will also hear about some of the changes we have seen on the site already\, including the very welcome appearance of wild-living beavers. \nYou will also hopefully experience some of the varied wildlife we have on site\, but even if the creatures are elusive on the day\, we know you will still find the site a beautiful\, peaceful and restorative place to be. \nYour tour will finish with refreshments in our 17th century farmhouse where conversations about rewilding and Heal can continue.

SUMMARY:Sacred Spring Pilgrimage Walk
DESCRIPTION:A Pilgrimage to the remnant of the once great Selwood Forest\, source of the headwaters to 5 Rivers. \nA greensand ridge that forms the ancient Forest of Selwood features numerous aquifers that feed the headwaters to no less than 5 rivers\, flowing North\, East\, South and West. \nDrawing on archaeological research\, this will be an exploration of the Great Forest that places it at the heart centre of the Sacred Landscape. \nWe will walk in the footsteps of the ancestors\, and echoing their veneration of Springs and Rivers – a recognition of the sacred power of water\, we’ll perform a short blessing at 2 of these Springs\, before visiting an Iron Age Hillfort and a Bronze Age Barrow. \nWhat is the difference between a Walk and a Pilgrimage? Primarily\, it is about intention: walking the old tracks becomes a spiritual act when walked with intention – by doing so we help to preserve and strengthen those ancient songlines…….the Earth re-awakens to our heartfelt care\, and we are healed in return. \nWhilst led by an experienced Druid Ceremonialist\, this is an inclusive walk\, welcoming of all faiths and none. If you wish to step aside and quietly observe the Blessings rather than take part\, please feel free to do so… \nMin age: 18

SUMMARY:The Great Pause: A Nature Immersion Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Heal Somerset on the afternoon of Sunday 19 July\, where together we will take The Great Pause — the first-ever mass nature bathe on a UK rewilding site. \nThe event is open to all ages and free to attend. If you’re able to make a £10 donation per person\, it helps support Heal’s work. \nThis will be the perfect chance to be part of a shared experience — enjoying half an hour or more of peace and stillness together in the midst of nature on a sunny summer’s afternoon\, followed by a bring-your-own picnic if you would like. \nAll you will need to take part is a blanket to lie on. You will make yourself comfortable and settle in. Then\, as we signal the beginning of the Great Pause\, you may choose to look up into the blue or close your eyes. In silence\, over the next half hour or so\, you will take in the sounds of nature: birds calling\, grasshoppers chirring and grasses rustling in the warm breeze. \nParticipants are also invited to bring a picnic for afterwards and to join and share with those around you who might have come alone. \nCamping will also be available on the Sunday night if you want to extend the peace and spend even more time immersed in nature in our beautiful rewilding site. You can select a camping ticket when you book your place. \nPlease note that this event is weather dependent and if the forecast for 19 July is poor\, the event will be rescheduled to Sunday 26 July at the same time. \nTHE EXPERIENCE \nThe Great Pause is for everyone and is taking place in two areas\, one for people aged 14 and over\, and one for families. This allows those without children to relax in a quieter environment\, while parents can feel comfortable knowing their children can enjoy themselves without concern about making noise. \nThe 14+ area is a five minute walk to a place at the heart of our rewilding site. \nThe family area is close to the parking area and will also be suitable for those with mobility issues. \nBoth areas have a drinking water tap and a compost loo. Neither area has car access onto the field. \nThe site is in a very quiet rural area but we want to make event participants aware that there is a train line which runs along the valley\, with trains passing through from time to time. \nLOCATION\nHeal Somerset is in a very rural location\, a few miles from Bruton\, Frome\, the A303 and the Wiltshire border\, at Lower West Barn Farm\, Bindon Lane\, Witham Friary\, BA11 5HH. Directions will be sent in a confirmation email. \nTIMINGS\nArrive: 2.30pm\nBriefing: 3pm\nImmersion begins: 3.30pm\nImmersion ends: 4pm\nOptional picnic: 4pm onwards\, stay on and tuck in to your picnic\nEvent closes: 5.30pm. Campers can now set up their tents in the campsite

SUMMARY:Twilight Beaver Watch
DESCRIPTION:This is a rare opportunity to join a small group for a twilight beaver watch and experience the magic of seeing these remarkable animals living wild. You’ll enjoy a peaceful and immersive evening watching wildlife emerge as day turns to night. \nOur thriving beaver family has really made themselves at home on site at Heal Somerset\, establishing an impressive lodge and building a network of dams. They have been busy transforming the landscape in extraordinary ways and they are creating thriving wetlands that support a wealth of wildlife\, improve water quality and increase biodiversity. \nFull disclosure: beavers are often seen from the viewing area\, so there’s a good chance that you’ll see at least one\, but we can’t guarantee it. But even if you don’t\, you will learn lots about them as well as witness their hard work whilst spending valuable time in nature. \nEach beaver watch will be carefully led by experienced wildlife guide Nick Patel. His respectful approach will minimise disturbance as the beavers’ wellbeing is always the priority. We ask that all attendees follow this approach. I’m super passionate about showing everyone who visits the site the wealth of wildlife bouncing back\, including some really beautiful species and fabulous rewilding habitats.”

SUMMARY:Wild Guardians at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:A relaxed\, monthly volunteer gathering to support nature restoration. Rooted in a spirit of community and curiosity. Join us to learn new skills\, spend time in nature\, and connect with like-minded folk. \nCome and spend a few hours in nature doing something that matters. No experience is necessary\, just a willingness to get stuck in and try something new. \n42 Acres has been a rewilding nature reserve for over a decade and is species-rich. Join us to connect with the natural world through hands-on activities from wildlife surveying\, to tending habitats\, and slowing down with nature photography. \nSessions run on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm (except in May when we are meeting at 8pm for bats and beavers!). There will be time to connect\, wander\, and simply be outside. If you’re up for it\, you’re welcome to join in for a wild swim too. At 1pm we’ll stop and share a simple lunch together\, provided by 42 Acres. \n____ \nSun 31 May: Bats and Beavers: \nPart of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count\, with guest expert Keith Ball (Somerset Bat Group). Please note: this is an evening session\, running 8–10pm\, as we head out for some gentle nocturnal exploration. \nSun 28 June: Hazel Dormice & Reading Nature: \nJoin us to create footprint tunnels for hazel dormice to discover whether this protected species (that have been spotted on neighbouring land!) exist at 42. We’ll also take a relaxed walk around the 11-acre lake\, recording observations and contributing to global biodiversity databases. We’ll look for signs of beaver activity\, tracks\, and birdlife\, and finish at the white stork enclosure\, part of our species reintroduction work. Guided by Lynne Sewell (Sustainable Witham)\, Robyn Caple (@nestandnettleecology)\, and Lisa Hawes (42 Acres). \nSun 26 July: Butterflies\, Dragonflies + Pond Dipping: \nPart of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme\, one of the longest-running insect surveys in the world. We’ll also explore the world of fungi\, discovering what’s emerging across the site at this time of year. \nPlease Note: \n– Gloves and wellies/boots are necessary.\n– If you have issues with mobility please let us know before signing up\, we will do our best to accommodate.\n– Please book only if you’re committed to attending and staying for the entire session.\n– If you become unable to attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else.\n– If rain stops play\, we have a Plan B and will aim to move inside to create bee bricks and/or a herbarium together.\n– Please speak with your licensed medical health professional if you have any health conditions or are pregnant.\n– As much as we love our four-legged friends\, we can not allow dogs on this experience. \nLocation & Arrival: \nPlease arrive 10 minutes before we begin. SUMMARY:Rewilding in Action: A Tour of Heal Somerset with Heal Co-Founder Jan Stannard
DESCRIPTION:Come along and learn more about nature-led recovery at Heal’s first rewilding site\, Heal Somerset. \nHeal Somerset began its recovery from its ecologically depleted state at the beginning of 2023 and nature here is already beginning to bounce back.

SUMMARY:Shared Earth Learning - SEN summer holiday sessions
DESCRIPTION:Shared Earth Learning are running forest school sessions for children with additional needs this summer holiday. These sessions are subsidised by Somerset Council’s Community Inclusion Action Team. \nForest school is for children of all ages and abilities. It builds on a child’s innate motivation and positive attitude to learning. One of the benefits of forest school is the high adult/pupil ratio\, which encourages an attitude of shared inquiry and enjoyment of the natural world. Children are encouraged to explore and appreciate their environment\, enabling them to think creatively and confidently. Forest school is child-led with opportunities to take risks\, make choices and initiate learning for themselves\, providing a chance to discover their abilities without fear of failure or criticism. \nThese sessions are suitable for children aged between 7 and 18 years. \n\n10am – 2:30pm\n£15 per child (a sibling and carer can come for free)\nUp to 7 children per session\n\nTo book\, please email: sharedearthbookings@gmail.com \nShared Earth Learning are also offering non-SEN forest school sessions – you can find out more here.
