SUMMARY:Frome Drama Presents Jean Genet’s the Maids
DESCRIPTION:An intimate reimagining of Genet’s The Maids\, set in contemporary Frome and performed at the Archangel. \nIn a curated bedroom of shabby-chic luxury and new-age calm\, two local cleaners rehearse roles\, rituals and revenge. Their employer — a glossy newcomer from the Babington House set — is always present\, even when absent. \nVoicenotes replace letters. Livestreams replace confessions. Screens watch back. Filtered through the language of social media and self-performance\, Genet’s dark fantasy of class\, power and desire unfolds at close quarters. \nWhat is real?\nWhat is performed?\nAnd who controls the narrative? \nUnsettling. Playful. Dangerously intimate.\nAdult themes. \nTimes stated are start of performance. Please arrive early to be seated. \nThis event is part of Frome Festival.

SUMMARY:Strings of Light – Secrets of the Harp Guitar
DESCRIPTION:International award-winning guitarist and composer Jon Pickard presents a rare solo performance on the extraordinary 23-string harp guitar. Fresh from headlining the 5th International European Harp Guitar Festival in Saujon France\, and winning the prestigious ‘Best Guitar Composition’ at the Široki Brijeg Guitarist Festival in Herzegovina. Jon blends classical\, folk and original music\, creating shimmering textures and lyrical storytelling with an immersive\, transporting experience. “Weaves a flying carpet on the strings… almost unbelievable\, technically and stylistically.” — Akustik Gitarre Magazine. \nThe performance invites audiences into a deeper\, more attentive way of listening\, echoing an older tradition where music and storytelling were inseparable. Sound unfolds magically\, allowing resonance and silence to shape the experience as much as melody. The effect is mesmerising and deeply physical\, filling the space and encouraging the imagination to wander freely\, as if stepping briefly outside modern time. \nAt the heart of the programme are not 1 but 2 of the rarest instruments in the world\, with over 300 years of history\, whose origins trace back to early European music-making\, yet whose voices still feels startlingly fresh. In Jon Pickard’s hands\, the harp-guitars become vessels for atmosphere and narrative\, capable of conjuring vast inner landscapes from a single performer. Audiences frequently describe a sense of journey and transformation\, captured by BritishTheatre.com: “In Pickard’s hands the ability of the instruments to teleport the listener is breath-taking.” \nEmotion runs powerfully throughout the music. Rather than demanding attention\, it draws listeners inward\, offering moments of reflection\, wonder\, and a rare depth. The Fine Times Recorder describes the experience as “Beautiful\, atmospheric….profoundly emotional and spiritual…You want to close your eyes and let the pictures created by the musician take you.” Each listener is free to discover their own stories within the sound. \n  \nThis event is part of Frome Festival.

SUMMARY:Quorum with Charles Wiffen
DESCRIPTION:Quorum perform Ravel’s ravishing quartet in F major\, followed by Bartok’s piano quintet where they are joined by a regular collaborator\, pianist Charles Wiffen. This magnificent work was composed when Bartok was only 22\, and combines his Hungarian nationalistic style with his early passion for Richard Strauss. The result is dramatic\, exciting\, and highly accessible! \nThis event is part of Frome Festival.

SUMMARY:Alice Seeley – Anti-Slavery Campaigner
DESCRIPTION:This joint exhibition with Photo|Frome presents searing photographs by Frome resident Alice Seeley (1870–1970) in King Leopold II’s Congo Free State. Using her Kodak camera\, she documented the mutilation of Congolese people under a brutal regime designed to enforce rubber production quotas. Shown internationally as lantern slides\, her images galvanised public opinion and resulted in the collapse of Leopold’s personal rule in 1908. Alice Seeley was arguably the first photographer to create and use her own images as part of an active campaign for social change. Some photographs in this exhibition may be distressing. \nThe exhibition runs during Frome Museum’s normal opening hours: 11am to 3pm Tuesday to Saturday\, plus Independent Market Sundays (5th July) \nwww.frome-museum.org \nThis event is part of Frome Festival.
