And who gets to decide what comes next? \nThe ForEm invites people to explore the stories they tell about the town: its independence\, creativity and community spirit\, and also its challenges\, contradictions and changing identities. Expect performances\, films\, artworks\, games\, community stories and a warm invitation to question ways of thinking\, feeling\, dreaming\, sensing – and making sense – of the town we share. \nThe ForEm is the commissioned work of Frome-based artist Kate Keara Pelen\, developed through her collaboration with the University of Glasgow’s Civic Imaginary Partnerships research project. It turns a year of research into a space for the town to play with\, challenge and add to what we have found. \nFree performances: \nTom Spencer will guide an unconventional gallery tour through the artefacts\, stories\, myths and characters of the town. \nMartin Scott – bringing together Town Crier\, Cheese Lord and long-time observer of Frome life – will invite audiences to spin the wheel of Frome Roulette\, triggering different stories about the town’s civic tribes\, traditions and archetypes. \nPlus: \nThe Community Loom designed by Claire Orpin and Tamara Jones. \nFilms made by Frome residents through the community film project led by Dr John Sealey of Fabian’s Films (shown on a loop in the gallery all day and an official screening and Q&A between 5-6pm) \nDrop in\, disagree\, contribute\, play. \nhttps://civicimaginaries.gla.ac.uk/welcome-to-the-forem/

On the day he reaches 21 he leaves the ship\, announcing that he now intends to dedicate his life to the Pirates’ destruction. The Pirate King checks the contract’s small print – and realises that as Frederick’s birthday is 29th February on a leap year he has only had four birthdays and is actually indentured for another 63 years. With only the Penzance constabulary to protect him\, will Frederick be forced to serve the pirates until he is 84? And will his sweetheart\, Mabel\, wait for him that long? \nPerformed by a six-strong cast of actors/singers with fully orchestrated accompaniment\, The Pirates of Penzance boasts such gloriously memorable songs as “To be a Pirate King!”; “Modern Major General” and “A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One”. With razor-sharp satire and glittering wit\, it remains as fresh as if it had been written today. \nThis performance will be outdoors at the E.C.O.S. Amphitheatre. Running away hasn’t worked; lying won’t work; he must become a real boy to achieve the belonging he craves. Collodi describes the development from puppet to real boy in the same way that useless green timber is matured into useful\, well-seasoned wood – a transformation only achieved through trials of water and fire. Illyria celebrates this magical coming-of-age tale in a thrilling musical outdoor show. \nThis performance will be outdoors at the E.C.O.S. Amphitheatre. No experience is needed — just curiosity and a sense of adventure. Our sessions are designed to inspire creativity in every child\, whatever their background or ability.\nAs well as making amazing art\, there’ll be campfires\, outdoor games and plenty of time to explore the site. Join our brilliant volunteer reptile surveyor\, Lynne Sewell\, for a small-group Family Reptile Adventure\, where you’ll explore the fascinating world of Britain’s native reptiles. \nLynne knows all the best places to look and will lead a gentle walk around Heal Somerset\, sharing her knowledge of the reptiles that call the site home. Along the way\, you’ll learn how to spot and identify different species\, discover the habitats they depend on and keep an eye out for plenty of other summer wildlife too. \nThe walk also takes in our thriving wetlands\, where you’ll be able to see the remarkable changes our resident beavers have been making to the landscape and you may even meet our friendly\, wild-living tamworth pigs\, Ticket and Tailor. \nLizards and other species you might see: At Heal\, we have recorded common lizard\, slow worm\, grass snake\, common toad and all three native newt species: smooth newt\, palmate newt and great crested newt. You can also expect to see dragonflies\, butterflies\, birds and a host of other summer wildlife. \nAbout your guide\, Lynne \nLynne has been interested in reptiles and amphibians for as long as she can remember. As a child\, she would lift rocks or discarded sheets of corrugated iron in the hope of finding reptiles sheltering beneath them. Lynne says “on one memorable occasion\, I even jumped into a lake to catch a grass snake which I then took home to my long-suffering parents! That fascination has stayed with me throughout my life\, and I still feel a thrill whenever I lift something that might be hiding a reptile or amphibian underneath. I feel lucky to be able to regularly survey for reptiles at Heal”.
