Non mainstream cinema which matters. \n23rd September Films\nFILM 1 – OBRONI WAWU – DEAD MAN’S CLOTHES: Obroni Wawu\, meaning “dead white man’s clothes”\, follows Ghanaian creatives and traders as they confront the environmental and social toll of second hand clothing dumped from the Global North.\nFILM 2 – SAURY SEAWEED: The Korean Peninsula is a land where the Cold War never died. As oceans warm\, the southern survival limit of a mythic marine plant is relentlessly retreating north. The species is vanishing from the South. \n21st October Films\nFILM 1 – A FOOD STORY: There is a place in Tenerife where humans and animals sustain themselves with a simple yet extraordinary resource: food waste. They collect\, segregate\, cook\, store\, and create compost from it\, by sustaining up to 40 people and 400 animals each day using just the waste from a single supermarket\nFILM 2 – INTO THE WILD: INTO THE WILD explores the American West and its unique ecosystems\, where iconic species such as mustangs and coyotes are under threat. Alongside zoologist Yvan Kereun\, the film blends science\, Indigenous knowledge\, and conservation practices \n18th November Films\nFILM 1 – WHEN SOLAR LIGHTS UPON THE COMMUNITY: In a timeworn community in Shanghai\, a group of Green Housewives has turned the neighbourhood into a stage for renewable energy. When solar lights upon the community\, the players step forward: a mother of three who studied renewable power in Scandinavia; an artist who creates gallery-worthy sculptures with the community from recyclables; China’s first household-solar pioneer; a high-schooler who runs the community garden’s irrigation on renewable energy.\nFILM 2 – WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WILDLIFE IN THE CITY: The city is like a living organism. Healthy and in perfect balance\, it can make its inhabitants happy\, people as well as animals and plants. If it gets out of balance\, it becomes ill and with it all the creatures that live in it. It is a valuable habitat for animals such as hedgehogs\, rhinoceros beetles and swallowtails. But cities are under pressure. \n16th December Films\nFILM 1 – ROOTED IN RESILIENCE: In an economy often built on extraction\, the women in Rooted in Resilience offer a powerful alternative built on reciprocity. This documentary captures the journey of Indigenous entrepreneurs who treat the land as a relative rather than a resource.\nFILM 2 – WASTED 2025: Wasted prompts us to re-examine who we are and our values — to re-think our relationship with the world around us. We cannot continue to extract and exploit our ecosystems at unprecedented rates and continue down the path of wasting our precious natural resources. We want to inspire action across business\, policy and individuals to clean up our communities\, cities and natural habitats and create healthy\, thriving economies.

SUMMARY:Wild Guardians at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:A relaxed\, monthly volunteer gathering to support nature restoration. Rooted in a spirit of community and curiosity. Join us to learn new skills\, spend time in nature\, and connect with like-minded folk. \nCome and spend a few hours in nature doing something that matters. No experience is necessary\, just a willingness to get stuck in and try something new. \n42 Acres has been a rewilding nature reserve for over a decade and is species-rich. Join us to connect with the natural world through hands-on activities from wildlife surveying\, to tending habitats\, and slowing down with nature photography. \nSessions run on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm (except in May when we are meeting at 8pm for bats and beavers!). There will be time to connect\, wander\, and simply be outside. If you’re up for it\, you’re welcome to join in for a wild swim too. At 1pm we’ll stop and share a simple lunch together\, provided by 42 Acres. \n____ \nSun 31 May: Bats and Beavers: \nPart of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count\, with guest expert Keith Ball (Somerset Bat Group). Please note: this is an evening session\, running 8–10pm\, as we head out for some gentle nocturnal exploration. \nSun 28 June: Hazel Dormice & Reading Nature: \nJoin us to create footprint tunnels for hazel dormice to discover whether this protected species (that have been spotted on neighbouring land!) exist at 42. We’ll also take a relaxed walk around the 11-acre lake\, recording observations and contributing to global biodiversity databases. We’ll look for signs of beaver activity\, tracks\, and birdlife\, and finish at the white stork enclosure\, part of our species reintroduction work. Guided by Lynne Sewell (Sustainable Witham)\, Robyn Caple (@nestandnettleecology)\, and Lisa Hawes (42 Acres). \nSun 26 July: Butterflies\, Dragonflies + Pond Dipping: \nPart of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme\, one of the longest-running insect surveys in the world. With guest expert Fred Giles\, we’ll explore the world of butterflies\, dragonflies\, and other insects\, with a chance to get closer through pond dipping and observation. \nSun 30 Aug: Reptiles and Botanics: \nJoin us to check reptile refuges across the site\, helping us understand which species are present (and which are likely absent). Or take a creative route\, help us start making a handmade herbarium for the site while learning how to “key out”\, a step by step process used to identify unknown plant species. \nSun 27 Sep: Trees\nDiscover the stories of Britain’s ancient and veteran trees\, and learn how to identify and photograph them in their late-summer form. \nSun 25 Oct: Harvest Mice and Native Fungi:\nHelp us ascertain whether harvest mice are present on the land at 42\, we’ll search together for their tiny nests. We’ll also explore the world of fungi\, discovering what’s emerging across the site at this time of year. \nPlease Note: \n– Gloves and wellies/boots are necessary.\n– If you have issues with mobility please let us know before signing up\, we will do our best to accommodate.\n– Please book only if you’re committed to attending and staying for the entire session.\n– If you become unable to attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else.\n– If rain stops play\, we have a Plan B and will aim to move inside to create bee bricks and/or a herbarium together.\n– Please speak with your licensed medical health professional if you have any health conditions or are pregnant.\n– As much as we love our four-legged friends\, we can not allow dogs on this experience. \nLocation & Arrival: \nPlease arrive 10 minutes before we begin. SUMMARY:No Dig with Charles Dowding at The Village Frome
DESCRIPTION:Charles Dowding is coming to The Village Frome for a special two-hour workshop on no dig growing. \nFor more than 40 years\, Charles has been exploring how we can grow healthy\, abundant food while disturbing the soil as little as possible. His no dig approach is rooted in a simple idea: feed the soil from the surface with compost and organic matter\, then allow its extraordinary web of life to do the work beneath. \nDuring this workshop\, Charles will share the foundations of no dig growing\, including how to create and maintain productive beds\, work with compost\, manage weeds and grow more food with less time and effort. \nWhether you have an allotment\, a vegetable patch\, a community garden or simply the beginnings of an idea\, this workshop will offer practical knowledge and encouragement for growers at every stage. \nAt The Village\, we are creating a place where people can gather\, learn and rebuild a relationship with the land and with one another. We are delighted to welcome Charles to share his experience as our own community growing spaces continue to take root. \nWith support from The National Lottery Community Fund\, we are able to offer tickets on a sliding scale of £3\, £6 or £9. Please pay what you can. Every ticket helps us continue growing The Village and creating more opportunities for people to learn\, gather and connect with the land. \nPlaces are limited and advance booking is essential.
