SUMMARY:Royal Opera: Siegfried
DESCRIPTION:Raised by a scheming dwarf and unaware of his true family origins\, a young man embarks on an epic journey. Soon\, destiny brings him face-to-face with a shattered sword\, a fearsome dragon and the cursed ring it guards\, and a Valkyrie forced into enchanted slumber… \nMoments of transcendent beauty and heroic triumph sparkle in the third chapter of Wagner’s Ring cycle\, brought to life under Barrie Kosky’s inspired eye following his spectacular Das Rheingold (2023) and Die Walküre (2025). Andreas Schager\, in his much-anticipated debut with The Royal Opera\, stars as Siegfried’s titular hero\, alongside Christopher Maltman’s towering Wanderer\, Peter Hoare’s treacherous Mime and Elisabet Strid’s radiant Brünnhilde. Antonio Pappano conducts\, drawing out the unspoken tensions and ethereal mysticism of Wagner’s dynamic score.

SUMMARY:Slow Sunday at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:Spend a slow Sunday afternoon at 42 Acres and reconnect with nature\, with each other\, and with the elements.\nCome as you are and spend a relaxed Sunday of outdoor vibes. Your meal will be cooked over an open fire with nourishing ingredients organically-grown and wild-foraged on this land.\nGo for a wild swim in the beaver-filled lake\, and relax in the wood-fired sauna. Or simply take time and space to rest and restore on land that has been allowed to do the same. \nYou’re welcome to do as much or as little as you like:\n– Roam the 173 acres of our land – home to millions of lives.\n– Wild swim in our 7-acre lake or take out our rowboat\, SUP board\, or canoe. (Please note these activities are at your own risk – there is no lifeguard).\n– Look out for beaver\, otter\, wild boar\, hare\, deer and a multitude of birds.\n– Explore our rewilded spaces; woodland mushroom farm; permaculture garden; edible ornamental walled garden; species re-introduction projects; and secret treehouse. Slow Sundays at 42 Acres Retreat are all about connection – with yourself\, with others\, and with nature.\nWild swimming\, a wood-fired sauna\, woodland walks\, and incredible food grown on the land itself – all shared around a long table in the woods\, with birdsong overhead and an eclectic mix of people from all walks of life. It’s a really well-thought-out setup. Simple\, but intentional. The team were welcoming\, knowledgeable (beavers\, storks\, permaculture\, mushroom farms\, soil-to-gut) and clearly passionate about what they’re building. This was their first Slow Sunday- here’s to many more!’\nLynda\, Slow Sunday Guest\, June 2025. \n‘A group of 6 of us attended 42Acres Slow Sunday and we all throughly enjoyed ourselves. The land is beautiful\, with lots of lovely quiet trails to walk and soak it all up. We even spotted storks\, buzzards and believe we may have accidentally bumped into a wild boar too. The setting for lunch is fabulous. Really cosy atmosphere and delicious food. Some of us even jumped in the lake for a quick swim which was really refreshing.’\nLucy\, Slow Sunday Guest\, August 2025 \n‘Beautiful experience of reconnection to people\, place and soul.’\nSara\, Slow Sunday Guest\, August 2025. \nPlease Note:\n– Must be booked in advance. SUMMARY:The Wurzels
DESCRIPTION:The Wurzels have paved the way for Scrumpy n’ Western – a genre packed full of double entendre\, mainstream parody and a comical folk style. The perfect accompaniment to cider drinking. \nPerforming a career spanning set consisting of all the hits\, stories and jokes from a career lasting more than 50 years\, The Wurzels continue to play over 100 sell-out shows and festivals every year. \nTheir quintessentially West Country cover of Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘Ruby’ has been a massive show favourite of late\, as well as their hip hop version of the ubiquitous hit ‘Combine Harvester’. \nThe Wurzels are regularly asked how long will they keep going. The band always respond that they intend to keep going whilst they enjoy performing – and that suits the rest of us just fine!

SUMMARY:Seed Talks – The History of Folk Horror
DESCRIPTION:Explore the shadowy history of folk horror and its connection to ancient customs and rituals on the British Isles. Followed by Q&A. \nWhy do stories of ghosts\, witches and shapes in the night continue to haunt our imaginations? What is it about those ancient landscapes\, ruined churches\, mist-shrouded moors and lonely country lanes which so frequently feature in folk horror tales? In this talk\, Professor Marisa Linton uncovers the strange and compelling history of folk horror in the British Isles – from eerie legends rooted in pagan belief to tales shaped by the land itself\, its forgotten rituals\, sacred sites and unsettling past. \nTracing a line from whispered folklore through the chilling ghost stories of M. R. James and Arthur Conan Doyle\, and on to Gothic classics such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula\, we will explore how folk horror has continually reinvented fear for new generations. From The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General\, to modern stories of outsiders stumbling upon remote communities still ruled by “old ways\,” the genre has never stopped evolving. Today\, folk horror is experiencing a revival\, as writers and filmmakers breathe fresh life into ancient legends\, revealing that the uncanny is very much alive and thriving in the twenty-first century. \nDoors open at 7pm\, talk starts at 7:30pm – come down early to grab a good seat! \nFollow us on IG @seedtalks \nSpeaker Bio: \nMarisa Linton is a historian\, writer and Professor Emerita of History at Kingston University\, where she taught the history of folklore\, belief in magic\, the history of women\, and the history of European witch-hunts. She is internationally recognised as a leading authority on the French Revolution\, the European Enlightenment and the history of women in France. \nAlongside her academic career\, she has delivered numerous public talks\, appeared on TV and radio\, and served as a historical adviser for TV. Today\, she also writes fantasy novels that draw on her love for ancient Celtic Britain\, folklore and belief in magic\, ghost stories and the supernatural. \nThis talk is 16+

SUMMARY:Slow Sunday: A Springtime Day Retreat at Vallis Farm
DESCRIPTION:An invitation to pause with Kate Foster\, The Intuitive Chef. \nThis day retreat blends seasonal cooking with gentle mindfulness — a chance to step away from noise and reconnect with simple pleasures. We’ll cook thoughtfully\, eat slowly\, and create space for reflection. Expect nourishing food\, unhurried conversation\, and a sense of calm that lingers long after the day ends. \nA beautiful Mother’s Day gift — or a gift to yourself. \nLimited spaces to keep it intimate. \nAbout the day: Sunday 29 March\, 1100 – 1600 \nWe’ll gather in the Vallis Farm dining room for coffee and freshly baked cake before I demonstrate some of the day’s wholesome and delicious lunch menu\, which makes the most of Vallis Farm and local produce. \nAfter a little food chat and Q&A\, there’ll be time for a wander in the Vallis Farm gardens while I put the finishing touches to lunch. \nAfter enjoying lunch together\, you’re invited to rest by the fire or in the garden and take time for some mindful creativity: bring your own knitting\, book\, sketchpad or project\, or join me for a guided session on the forgotten art of letter writing (materials and stamps included!). \nWe’ll end with a chance to share our reflections on a day spent living slowly\, and gently set our intentions for the days ahead. \nSample lunch menu: \nVallis botanical blend sourdough\, freshly made butter\, cultured pickles \nWhipped feta with hazelnut and watercress pesto \nSlow-cooked Persian rhubarb and spring lamb stew\, seasonal veg from the farm (vegetarian: Persian herb and spring vegetable stew) \nHoney poached pear\, bergamot buttermilk sorbet\, lavender shortbread \n£75/person \nVenue: Vallis Farm\, Egford Hill\, Frome BA11 3JQ
