DESCRIPTION:Welcome to The ForEm – Part fête. Part exhibition. Part experiment. \nThe ForEm asks deceptively simple questions: \nWhat makes Frome\, Frome? And who gets to decide what comes next? \nThe ForEm invites people to explore the stories they tell about the town: its independence\, creativity and community spirit\, and also its challenges\, contradictions and changing identities. Expect performances\, films\, artworks\, games\, community stories and a warm invitation to question ways of thinking\, feeling\, dreaming\, sensing – and making sense – of the town we share. \nThe ForEm is the commissioned work of Frome-based artist Kate Keara Pelen\, developed through her collaboration with the University of Glasgow’s Civic Imaginary Partnerships research project. It turns a year of research into a space for the town to play with\, challenge and add to what we have found. \nFree performances: \nTom Spencer will guide an unconventional gallery tour through the artefacts\, stories\, myths and characters of the town. \nMartin Scott – bringing together Town Crier\, Cheese Lord and long-time observer of Frome life – will invite audiences to spin the wheel of Frome Roulette\, triggering different stories about the town’s civic tribes\, traditions and archetypes. \nPlus: \nThe Community Loom designed by Claire Orpin and Tamara Jones. \nFilms made by Frome residents through the community film project led by Dr John Sealey of Fabian’s Films (shown on a loop in the gallery all day and an official screening and Q&A between 5-6pm) \nDrop in\, disagree\, contribute\, play. \nhttps://civicimaginaries.gla.ac.uk/welcome-to-the-forem/

Your meal will be cooked over an open fire with nourishing ingredients organically-grown and wild-foraged on this land.\nGo for a wild swim in the beaver-filled lake\, and relax in the wood-fired sauna. Or simply take time and space to rest and restore on land that has been allowed to do the same. \nYou’re welcome to do as much or as little as you like:\n– Roam the 173 acres of our land – home to millions of lives.\n– Wild swim in our 7-acre lake or take out our rowboat\, SUP board\, or canoe. (Please note these activities are at your own risk – there is no lifeguard).\n– Look out for beaver\, otter\, wild boar\, hare\, deer and a multitude of birds.\n– Explore our rewilded spaces; woodland mushroom farm; permaculture garden; edible ornamental walled garden; species re-introduction projects; and secret treehouse. Rather than celebrating abundance\, it celebrates noticing\, seed heads instead of flowers\, texture instead of colour\, habitats instead of displays. \nTo celebrate this Autumn Equinox we invite you to join Amanda Randell Cox\, a local artist specialising in landscape-led botanical design\, at Heal Somerset for a morning of exploration\, creation and delicious food. We will start the day with tea\, coffee\, fruit and pastries followed by a guided walk around our beautiful rewilding site. No experience is necessary\, just a willingness to get stuck in and try something new. \n42 Acres has been a rewilding nature reserve for over a decade and is species-rich. Join us to connect with the natural world through hands-on activities from wildlife surveying\, to tending habitats\, and slowing down with nature photography. \nSessions run on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm (except in May when we are meeting at 8pm for bats and beavers!). There will be time to connect\, wander\, and simply be outside. If you’re up for it\, you’re welcome to join in for a wild swim too. At 1pm we’ll stop and share a simple lunch together\, provided by 42 Acres. \n____ \nSun 31 May: Bats and Beavers: \nPart of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count\, with guest expert Keith Ball (Somerset Bat Group). Please note: this is an evening session\, running 8–10pm\, as we head out for some gentle nocturnal exploration. \nSun 28 June: Hazel Dormice & Reading Nature: \nJoin us to create footprint tunnels for hazel dormice to discover whether this protected species (that have been spotted on neighbouring land!) exist at 42. We’ll also take a relaxed walk around the 11-acre lake\, recording observations and contributing to global biodiversity databases. We’ll look for signs of beaver activity\, tracks\, and birdlife\, and finish at the white stork enclosure\, part of our species reintroduction work. Guided by Lynne Sewell (Sustainable Witham)\, Robyn Caple (@nestandnettleecology)\, and Lisa Hawes (42 Acres). \nSun 26 July: Butterflies\, Dragonflies + Pond Dipping: \nPart of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme\, one of the longest-running insect surveys in the world. With guest expert Fred Giles\, we’ll explore the world of butterflies\, dragonflies\, and other insects\, with a chance to get closer through pond dipping and observation. \nSun 30 Aug: Reptiles and Botanics: \nJoin us to check reptile refuges across the site\, helping us understand which species are present (and which are likely absent). Or take a creative route\, help us start making a handmade herbarium for the site while learning how to “key out”\, a step by step process used to identify unknown plant species. \nSun 27 Sep: Trees\nDiscover the stories of Britain’s ancient and veteran trees\, and learn how to identify and photograph them in their late-summer form. \nSun 25 Oct: Harvest Mice and Native Fungi:\nHelp us ascertain whether harvest mice are present on the land at 42\, we’ll search together for their tiny nests. No auditions\, no performances and absolutely no singing experience needed.\nTogether we’ll sing simple\, uplifting songs from around the world\, learning everything by ear in a relaxed and supportive space. Singing has been shown to reduce stress\, lift mood\, regulate the nervous system and help us feel more connected to ourselves and each other.\nBabies and young children are very welcome. They can play\, feed\, nap\, wander around or join in however they like.
