SUMMARY:Let's Talk about Alice exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Alice Seeley\, adopted daughter of Frome\, helped bring down a King – with a camera. \nIn 1898\, twenty-seven-year-old Alice Seeley Harris sailed for King Leopold II’s Congo Free State. Over the next seven years\, her photographs of forced rubber labour\, mutilated workers\, and a father named Nsala mourning his murdered daughter on the veranda of her mission station\, shocked the world. They became the visual evidence behind what historians now recognise as the first photographic human-rights campaign – predating the better-known American documentary work of Lewis Hine by several years. \nHer images\, projected in lantern-slide lectures across Britain and the United States\, helped force Leopold to cede the Congo in 1908. Then\, Alice was largely written out of her own story. Even Mark Twain\, who shared her most famous photograph in his 1905 satirical pamphlet King Leopold’s Soliloquy\, did not write her name. \nThis summer\, Photo|Frome and Frome Museum bring Alice’s work home. We follow Alice’s journey from Merchants Barton to the Maringa River and back. We explore the role of missionaries\, humanitarian photography and the recognition of women – and we ask what her photographs still demand of us in 2026. The exhibition is built with care for visitors of all ages: an outer ring of display panels tells Alice’s story\, while an inner ring displays Alice’s photographic evidence of human rights abuse\, for those who choose to see it. \nOpening hours\nThe Exhibition runs from 30 June to 22 August at Frome Museum. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday\, 11am to 3pm\, plus Independent Market Sundays. \nEntry is free. \nSome of the photographs in the exhibition’s inner ring may be distressing.

SUMMARY:Nexus exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Nexus brings three artists together for a diverse exhibition of work\, examining different styles that share commonalities through their collective interpretation of colour\, composition\, and form. \nThis exhibition combines different approaches to contemporary art under one roof. Influenced by our individual experiences and ways of portraying the world\, Mark Elliott Smith\, Bernard Charnley and Kate Cochrane\, collaborate and provoke our perspectives and insights into specific genres. \nMark Elliott Smith’s work brings something new to abstraction. Inspired by dance and costume\, mediaeval art\, and his response to music\, he builds images which are analogues of the process of construction and destruction\, fragmentation and coherence. Painting in layers of flat acrylic colour\, his work animates space while creating the illusion of depth\, imparting an energising\, positive sense of possibility through his playful use of colour and form. \nBernard Charnley combines layered oil paint with oil bars and inserted sections of canvas\, creating work which moves between abstraction and figuration\, examining the relationships between geometry\, surface\, depth\, and illusion as imprints of the human. His interest in philosophy informs his portfolio of work\, which reflects on the nature of social fracture. \nKate Cochrane works in a variety of media\, including oils\, acrylics\, gouache\, and dry pastels. Taking inspiration from landscape\, trees\, rocks\, castle ruins and reflections in water\, her process of creating paintings\, along with wanting to express how she feels\, results in a rich tapestry of colour and texture. \n3 Aug – 13 Sept \nOpen: Sun – Tue / 9 – 5pm\nOpen: Wed – Sat / 9 – 9pm

SUMMARY:Illyria: Pinocchio
DESCRIPTION:Carlo Collodi’s classic is a perennial favourite. It is the third most translated book in the world\, having appeared in no fewer than 260 languages since it was published in 1883\, and has never been out of print. Childless toymaker Geppetto buys a piece of wood to make a puppet\, little realising the chaos he is about to unleash. The puppet yearns for adventure and runs away\, but instead of excitement\, only finds glorious attractions containing hidden dangers. \nHe returns home\, hoping to be showered with sympathy and learns his tribulations are just beginning. Running away hasn’t worked; lying won’t work; he must become a real boy to achieve the belonging he craves. Collodi describes the development from puppet to real boy in the same way that useless green timber is matured into useful\, well-seasoned wood – a transformation only achieved through trials of water and fire. Illyria celebrates this magical coming-of-age tale in a thrilling musical outdoor show. \nThis performance will be outdoors at the E.C.O.S. Amphitheatre. Please bring blankets\, cushions\, and chairs. We welcome picnics\, but please buy drinks from our bar. In the event of bad weather\, this event will move inside. \nRunning time: 95 minutes including interval\nRecommended: 5+\nTickets: £18 | Child: £10 | Students and those claiming financial assistance: £14\nRegistered carers go free

SUMMARY:MAGIS XL
DESCRIPTION:MAGIS XL the encore to THINK XL\, showcases 40 artworks generously donated by 40 artists each with a connection to Black Swan Arts to continue its 40th anniversary celebrations. \nThis major fundraising exhibition builds on the success of April’s THINK XL when many artists responded to personal requests to gift artwork for the benefit of the arts centre.  Initially a single exhibition was planned\, however with two thirds of the artworks sold\, word spread of the exhibition and more artists offered to donate their artwork. By mid May the idea for a second exhibition was underway. \nMAGIS XL is exhibiting artwork; ceramics\, glasswork\, paintings\, photographs and sculpture from Frome and regionally based artists who are nationally and internationally recognised in their fields\, including donations from Christopher Bucklow\, Ian Marlow MRSS\, Bruce Munro\, Sandra Porter RWA\, Patricia Volk FRSS. \n100% of sales with build on over £3000 raised from THINK XL\, with the aim to at least double the total\, all of which will support a secure future of Frome’s first centre for visual arts.

SUMMARY:Illyria: the Pirates of Penzance
DESCRIPTION:Frederick\, accidentally apprenticed to Pirates as a child\, is indentured to the Pirate King until his 21st birthday. On the day he reaches 21 he leaves the ship\, announcing that he now intends to dedicate his life to the Pirates’ destruction. The Pirate King checks the contract’s small print – and realises that as Frederick’s birthday is 29th February on a leap year he has only had four birthdays and is actually indentured for another 63 years. With only the Penzance constabulary to protect him\, will Frederick be forced to serve the pirates until he is 84? And will his sweetheart\, Mabel\, wait for him that long? \nPerformed by a six-strong cast of actors/singers with fully orchestrated accompaniment\, The Pirates of Penzance boasts such gloriously memorable songs as “To be a Pirate King!”; “Modern Major General” and “A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One”. With razor-sharp satire and glittering wit\, it remains as fresh as if it had been written today. \nThis performance will be outdoors at the E.C.O.S. Amphitheatre. Please bring blankets\, cushions\, and chairs. We welcome picnics\, but please buy drinks from our bar. In the event of bad weather\, this event will move inside. \nRunning time: 120 minutes including interval\nRecommended: All ages\nTickets: £20 | Child: £10 | Students and those claiming financial assistance: £14\nRegistered carers go free

SUMMARY:Welcome to The ForEm
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to The ForEm – Part fête. Part exhibition. Part experiment. \nThe ForEm asks deceptively simple questions: \nWhat makes Frome\, Frome? And who gets to decide what comes next? \nThe ForEm invites people to explore the stories they tell about the town: its independence\, creativity and community spirit\, and also its challenges\, contradictions and changing identities. Expect performances\, films\, artworks\, games\, community stories and a warm invitation to question ways of thinking\, feeling\, dreaming\, sensing – and making sense – of the town we share. \nThe ForEm is the commissioned work of Frome-based artist Kate Keara Pelen\, developed through her collaboration with the University of Glasgow’s Civic Imaginary Partnerships research project. It turns a year of research into a space for the town to play with\, challenge and add to what we have found. \nFree performances: \nTom Spencer will guide an unconventional gallery tour through the artefacts\, stories\, myths and characters of the town. \nMartin Scott – bringing together Town Crier\, Cheese Lord and long-time observer of Frome life – will invite audiences to spin the wheel of Frome Roulette\, triggering different stories about the town’s civic tribes\, traditions and archetypes. \nPlus: \nThe Community Loom designed by Claire Orpin and Tamara Jones. \nFilms made by Frome residents through the community film project led by Dr John Sealey of Fabian’s Films (shown on a loop in the gallery all day and an official screening and Q&A between 5-6pm) \nDrop in\, disagree\, contribute\, play. \nhttps://civicimaginaries.gla.ac.uk/welcome-to-the-forem/
