SUMMARY:Wild Guardians at 42 Acres
DESCRIPTION:A relaxed\, monthly volunteer gathering to support nature restoration. Rooted in a spirit of community and curiosity. Join us to learn new skills\, spend time in nature\, and connect with like-minded folk. \nCome and spend a few hours in nature doing something that matters. No experience is necessary\, just a willingness to get stuck in and try something new. \n42 Acres has been a rewilding nature reserve for over a decade and is species-rich. Join us to connect with the natural world through hands-on activities from wildlife surveying\, to tending habitats\, and slowing down with nature photography. \nSessions run on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm (except in May when we are meeting at 8pm for bats and beavers!). There will be time to connect\, wander\, and simply be outside. If you’re up for it\, you’re welcome to join in for a wild swim too. At 1pm we’ll stop and share a simple lunch together\, provided by 42 Acres. \n____ \nSun 31 May: Bats and Beavers: \nPart of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count\, with guest expert Keith Ball (Somerset Bat Group). Please note: this is an evening session\, running 8–10pm\, as we head out for some gentle nocturnal exploration. \nSun 28 June: Hazel Dormice & Reading Nature: \nJoin us to create footprint tunnels for hazel dormice to discover whether this protected species (that have been spotted on neighbouring land!) exist at 42. We’ll also take a relaxed walk around the 11-acre lake\, recording observations and contributing to global biodiversity databases. We’ll look for signs of beaver activity\, tracks\, and birdlife\, and finish at the white stork enclosure\, part of our species reintroduction work. Guided by Lynne Sewell (Sustainable Witham)\, Robyn Caple (@nestandnettleecology)\, and Lisa Hawes (42 Acres). \nSun 26 July: Butterflies\, Dragonflies + Pond Dipping: \nPart of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme\, one of the longest-running insect surveys in the world. With guest expert Fred Giles\, we’ll explore the world of butterflies\, dragonflies\, and other insects\, with a chance to get closer through pond dipping and observation. \nSun 30 Aug: Reptiles and Botanics: \nJoin us to check reptile refuges across the site\, helping us understand which species are present (and which are likely absent). Or take a creative route\, help us start making a handmade herbarium for the site while learning how to “key out”\, a step by step process used to identify unknown plant species. \nSun 27 Sep: Trees\nDiscover the stories of Britain’s ancient and veteran trees\, and learn how to identify and photograph them in their late-summer form. \nSun 25 Oct: Harvest Mice and Native Fungi:\nHelp us ascertain whether harvest mice are present on the land at 42\, we’ll search together for their tiny nests. We’ll also explore the world of fungi\, discovering what’s emerging across the site at this time of year. \nPlease Note: \n– Gloves and wellies/boots are necessary.\n– If you have issues with mobility please let us know before signing up\, we will do our best to accommodate.\n– Please book only if you’re committed to attending and staying for the entire session.\n– If you become unable to attend\, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your space to someone else.\n– If rain stops play\, we have a Plan B and will aim to move inside to create bee bricks and/or a herbarium together.\n– Please speak with your licensed medical health professional if you have any health conditions or are pregnant.\n– As much as we love our four-legged friends\, we can not allow dogs on this experience. \nLocation & Arrival: \nPlease arrive 10 minutes before we begin. Meeting at The Hermitage car park. Full directions are on our website: www.42acres.com/getting-here \nTerms & Conditions: \nhttps://www.42acres.com/terms-and-conditions-workshops-and-experienc

SUMMARY:Evening Wildlife Walk & Supper with Ecologist Rob Frith
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unhurried evening at Vallis Farm\, exploring what happens on the land after daylight fades. \nWe’ll begin at 8pm with supper together in the kitchen garden\, sharing a simple\, seasonal meal and a glass of wine. As the light starts to change\, ecologist Rob Frith will introduce the wildlife we’re likely to encounter and what makes this time of day so important for many species. \nAt sunset\, we’ll head out on a guided walk around the farm\, focusing on the creatures that emerge after dark. With Rob’s expertise\, we’ll look and listen for bats\, moths\, amphibians such as newts\, and other nocturnal life that often goes unnoticed. The walk will also explore how farming practices and landscape features support wildlife through the night. If conditions are right\, we may be lucky enough to spot barn owls hunting over the fields. \nThe evening will finish around 11pm\, offering a chance to slow down\, tune in\, and see the farm from a very different perspective. \nA relaxed and informative event for anyone interested in ecology\, wildlife\, and the rhythms of the land — no specialist knowledge required\, just curiosity.

SUMMARY:Family Reptile Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Calling all children with a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the natural world. \nDo you have a child who loves discovering wildlife? Join our brilliant volunteer reptile surveyor\, Lynne Sewell\, for a small-group Family Reptile Adventure\, where you’ll explore the fascinating world of Britain’s native reptiles. \nLynne knows all the best places to look and will lead a gentle walk around Heal Somerset\, sharing her knowledge of the reptiles that call the site home. Along the way\, you’ll learn how to spot and identify different species\, discover the habitats they depend on and keep an eye out for plenty of other summer wildlife too. \nThe walk also takes in our thriving wetlands\, where you’ll be able to see the remarkable changes our resident beavers have been making to the landscape and you may even meet our friendly\, wild-living tamworth pigs\, Ticket and Tailor. \nLizards and other species you might see: At Heal\, we have recorded common lizard\, slow worm\, grass snake\, common toad and all three native newt species: smooth newt\, palmate newt and great crested newt. You can also expect to see dragonflies\, butterflies\, birds and a host of other summer wildlife. \nAbout your guide\, Lynne \nLynne has been interested in reptiles and amphibians for as long as she can remember. As a child\, she would lift rocks or discarded sheets of corrugated iron in the hope of finding reptiles sheltering beneath them. Lynne says “on one memorable occasion\, I even jumped into a lake to catch a grass snake which I then took home to my long-suffering parents! That fascination has stayed with me throughout my life\, and I still feel a thrill whenever I lift something that might be hiding a reptile or amphibian underneath. I feel lucky to be able to regularly survey for reptiles at Heal”.

SUMMARY:Twilight Beaver Watch
DESCRIPTION:This is a rare opportunity to join a small group for a twilight beaver watch and experience the magic of seeing these remarkable animals living wild. You’ll enjoy a peaceful and immersive evening watching wildlife emerge as day turns to night. \nOur thriving beaver family has really made themselves at home on site at Heal Somerset\, establishing an impressive lodge and building a network of dams. They have been busy transforming the landscape in extraordinary ways and they are creating thriving wetlands that support a wealth of wildlife\, improve water quality and increase biodiversity. \nFull disclosure: beavers are often seen from the viewing area\, so there’s a good chance that you’ll see at least one\, but we can’t guarantee it. But even if you don’t\, you will learn lots about them as well as witness their hard work whilst spending valuable time in nature. \nEach beaver watch will be carefully led by experienced wildlife guide Nick Patel. His respectful approach will minimise disturbance as the beavers’ wellbeing is always the priority. We ask that all attendees follow this approach. \nAbout your workshop leader\, Nick Patel: \nNick is a tour guide\, conservationist\, naturalist and birder and is passionate about helping to protect\, create and maintain British wildlife. A lifelong Birdwatcher\, and former Nature reserve Warden\, Nick has devoted his life to shouting about how amazing our native biodiversity is and just why we should care for it. \nNick says “Having led tours here at Heal Somerset for two years now\, I’ve witnessed first-hand the speed at which nature has already made a comeback. I’m super passionate about showing everyone who visits the site the wealth of wildlife bouncing back\, including some really beautiful species and fabulous rewilding habitats.”

SUMMARY:Autumn Birds with Nick Patel
DESCRIPTION:Autumn is a time of movement and change in the bird world. Migrants arrive from the north to spend the winter here\, while summer visitors begin their journeys south. Hedgerows are alive with activity as birds feast on the season’s berries\, and grasslands and wetlands provide vital feeding grounds for both resident and passing species. \nJoin expert wildlife guide Nick Patel for a guided walk through the evolving habitats of Heal Somerset\, focusing on the rich and dynamic world of autumn birdlife. During this relaxed walk\, Nick will help you identify birds by sight and sound\, offering insights into plumage changes\, migration patterns\, and the different behaviours you are likely to observe at this time of year. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced birder\, you’ll come away with fresh skills and a deeper understanding of how birds adapt to the turning season. \nYou’ll also have the chance to learn more about how rewilding at Heal Somerset is creating safe havens for birdlife\, and how these habitats support biodiversity through the colder months. \nWhat you might see: redwing\, spotted flycatcher\, long tailed tit\, bullfinch\, stonechat\, blackcap\, goldcrest\, meadow pipit\, yellow wagtail\, green sandpiper\, snipe\, lapwing. \nAbout your guide\, Nick Patel: \nNick is a tour guide\, conservationist\, naturalist and birder and is passionate about helping to protect\, create and maintain British wildlife. A lifelong Birdwatcher\, and former Nature reserve Warden\, Nick has devoted his life to shouting about how amazing our native biodiversity is and just why we should care for it. Autumn migration is a particular passion of his\, and one of his favourite times of year to be out birding.

SUMMARY:Gareth Howell-Jones & Jay Griffiths | Our Place in the Living World
DESCRIPTION:Consider the Wondrous opens with festival Director Gareth Howell-Jones explaining how Consider the Wondrous came about\, why it’s in Frome\, what it is for\, and what he hopes the project can begin to achieve. He’ll talk too about the simple but radical way of looking squarely at nature that underpins his books Do Not Call the Tortoise and Your Lowly Hedgehog Knows. \nJay Griffiths has won many awards and written on a variety of subjects with guts\, grace and passion. In How Animals Heal Us\, she draws on deep research to show how animals not only help our physical and mental health but have influenced our society and carry a deep spiritual charge. The book is teeming with eye-opening stories – about the life-saving justice of dogs and lions; about the ethics of wolves; about fieldfares who demonstrate the power of community in the most unexpected way! \nThe event takes place in the festival’s venue for the weekend\, RISE. So come early\, grab a coffee (and perhaps a pastry) from onsite Rye Bakery and let your festival weekend begin in calm and wondrous style… \nPlease note: there is no parking at the venue itself\, but there is plenty of long-stay public parking within close walking distance to the venue at Cattle Market Car Park or Merchants Barton Car Park.  The venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users. \nThis event is part of the Consider the Wondrous | nature\, wonder\, books & us festival.

SUMMARY:JC Niala & Amanda Tuke talk to Stephen Moss | Wildlife in the Towns and Cities
DESCRIPTION:“As cities grow\, the danger is not only ecological but emotional… If we want a future that is not only liveable but meaningful\, we must learn to care differently. That begins by paying attention – to the cracks in the pavements\, the stories in trees\, the silence that follows loss.” JC Niala \nDid you know there are seahorses living wild in the Thames? Nature isn’t just about the countryside and cities aren’t just for people. \nIn their thoughtful\, heartfelt and often very funny books\, anthropologist JC Niala and ‘Urban Naturalist’ Amanda Tuke show how the non-human world co-exists with us – from the tiniest plants and lichen we tread underfoot to the lions and rhinos in JC’s hometown Nairobi. \nJC (author of The New Eden) tells the charged history of urban nature from the Diggers to community gardening in the wake of Grenfell\, from the canalization of rivers to the cows that shaped London. Amanda (author of Wild Pavements) brings her infectious delight to toad-patrolling\, ‘vismigging’\, and fish making their homes in shopping-trolleys. \nUrban light\, noise\, and sewage pollution remain a threat to most species\, but both authors meet people making real changes at a local level and tell their stories with interest and sparkle. The authors will be in conversation with celebrated nature writer and President of Somerset Wildlife Trust\, Stephen Moss. \nPlease note: there is no parking at the venue itself\, but there is plenty of long-stay public parking within close walking distance to the venue at Cattle Market Car Park or Merchants Barton Car Park.  The venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users. \nThis event is part of the Consider the Wondrous | nature\, wonder\, books & us festival.

SUMMARY:Horatio Clare talks to Julia Samuel | Nature and Our Minds
DESCRIPTION:Horatio has always been a lover and close observer of nature. In 2018 he had a mental breakdown; he was fully\, psychotically delusional. He wrote about that experience with great bravery in Heavy Light\, and a wonderfully generous and informative guide to mental health and the paths to recovery in Your Journey\, Your Way. \nMental health is infinitely complex\, and ‘nature-loving’ is no panacea\, but when\, in the midst of fantasy and derangement\, Horatio encountered a goshawk and stared into its golden eye\, for a moment all delusions fell away before the utterness of the wild world. Nature is no silver-bullet but it can be deeply restorative. \n“My parents were moved and soothed by nature in the same way\, and I learned this from them. It was always there for us\, and we were united in those moments\, free from pain and worry. That is what nature has always done for me.”\nHoratio Clare \nHoratio will be in conversation with Julia Samuel one of Britain’s most respected psychotherapists\, and Founder Patron of the Child Bereavement Trust. Julia is a Sunday Times bestselling author (Grief Works; This Too Shall Pass) and podcaster (Therapy Works).

SUMMARY:Rosa Vasquez Espinoza talks to Nicola Cutcher | The Secrets of the Amazon
DESCRIPTION:Rosa grew up in Peru with the rainforest as her back garden\, learning its lessons from her grandmother\, a native healer in natural medicine. Now as a biologist and conservationist\, she re-explores the Amazon with a unique blend of scientific enquiry and ancient insight. In her book The Spirit of the Rainforest\, we meet pink dolphins\, killer caterpillars\, stingless bees\, fish the size of a VW Beetle and a river whose waters flow at boiling point. \nRosa takes ayahuasca with the shamans and travels with the Ashaninka community who practise kametsu asaiki ‘living beautifully’ – ‘honouring the invisible spiritual bond we have with the natural world’. \n“The Amazon brings us back to our roots: to the simple yet profound truth that we are an extension of nature and beauty. It teaches us strength and resilience in the face of change. It shows us that generosity overpowers unfairness.”\nRosa Vasquez Espinoza \nRosa will be in conversation with Nicola Cutcher\, an investigative journalist\, documentary maker\, and campaigner against river pollution. \nThe event takes place in our venue for the weekend\, RISE. So come on along\, grab a mid-afternoon treat from onsite Rye Bakery and discover what our festival has to offer. \nPlease note: there is no parking at the venue itself\, but there is plenty of long-stay public parking within close walking distance to the venue at Cattle Market Car Park or Merchants Barton Car Park.
