Every year, on February 14th, a rocket is let off to signify the beginning of this most romantic ceremony, the lighting of the Valentine Gas Lamp.
Frome sweethearts come from miles around, make their way to the top of Catherine Hill, and watch as the famous and unique lamp is lit. This event is enjoyed by all who believe in love, whether you’re courting, married, have a beautiful family together, or still waiting for the one.
Reg Ling, Lamp Lighter and Restorer, and organiser of the event says “You’re allowed to cry, you’re allowed to laugh, well that’s all part of love isn’t it? It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Someone else said that last bit…”
The rocket launches at 5.30pm and the lamp will be lit at 6pm sharp – just in time for it to get dark, and still plenty of evening ahead of you.
There’ll be mulled wine for the adults, and fruit for the youngsters. The Town Crier will be in attendance, and as always, Reg will exclaim his best Valentine’s wishes unto the crowd.
“May you have a full and fair share of love in your life and a long and happy one”
